Dwight C. McLemore is a retired combat arms officer with the U.S. Army and is an accomplished bladesman and instructor. He is renowned for his vast knowledge of Bowie and big-knife fighting and has more than 18 years of experience in self-defense and martial arts. The owner of the School of Two Swords, McLemore is rated expert level with the American Knife Congress, is certified in kung fu and holds 1st dan in kendo.

One of the very best books ever written on the use of the Staff.

If you were going to design a college course on the use of the staff, this would be the book you would probably use. The author has written numerous books on the use of weapons such as the the Bowie and Big Knife Fighting, The Fighting Sword and the Fighting Tomahawk. Like all of his books, this one is full of large, clear illustrations to show each technique and tactic. He does not explain just one staff system but shows both the European and Asian staff fighting methods.

This fantastic work-book shows 25 fighting drills within its 18 detailed chapters. He explains the front, sides and rear of each technique with his great drawings.

In conclusion, if you are a serious martial artist or a student of the warrior arts, you will want to own this book. If you are a teacher of martial art weapons, this book is an excellent guide to the practical use of the staff.

If you are seeking to learn more about the use of the fighting staff, as a beginner or seasoned martial artist, this is the book to buy. McLemore covers both Western and Asian styles (he has trained in both for many years), combining the two for a solid foundation in both. This is the first book I have discovered that covers the evolution and martial use of the fighting staff from both East and West. McLemore also covers proper staff selection and both the history and technique behind making one's personal fighting staff.

About the Author
Grand Master Lillian Too is undoubtedly the world's most prolific and popular writer and advocate on living with good feng shui! She has written over 100 books that have been translated into 31 different languages, and over 10 million copies of her books have been sold worldwide. After graduating with an MBA from Harvard Business School, Lillian went on to pursue a highly successful business career in banking and finance in the 1980's in Hong Kong. Danny has written a great outline and insight into what its like to experience a locked in syndrome stroke and the trials and tribulations of what's its like to be totally at the mercy of the public heath system when you can't communicate in the usual ways. The luck of the draw with medical nursing staff and therapists who work three rotating shifts where you get excellent staff at times and some really duds at other times with the vagaries of new graduates and experienced staff who have been there for years and want to do things their ways. If you have ever had experienced the Hospital system, ICU wards and rehabilitation wards you will relate to his experience of these places that Danny relates. Also the vagaries of the standards of care available outside the hospital system when you are living in the community with a disability that requires caregivers who you have to totally rely on and who can let you down. Well done in just getting your story into book form Danny that journey is another threat woven through the book which is a story in itself.

Tim Gilles has authored or co-authored several textbooks and has been active in professional associations for many years. He was president and a board member of the California Automotive Teachers (CAT), a board member and election committee chair of the North American Council of Automotive Teachers (NACAT), a member of the California Community College Chancellor's Trade and Industry Advisory Committee, and education committee chair for the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Independent Automotive Professionals Association. Mr. Gilles has also served several terms as a board member of the Santa Barbara Automotive Service Council and is active in industry associations such as AERA, The Automotive Repair Coalition, and IATN, including delivering presentations at numerous conferences. He was an automotive teacher for 38 years and is professor emeritus in the Automotive Technology Department at Santa Barbara City College. Great book!!

As an automotive student I found this book to be very helpful. It deals with all the basics of todays advanced automobiles. It cover all areas from: basic electricity, ohms law, engine performance, ignition, cooling, emissions, transmissions, brakes and even a little auto body. It deals with the different subjects from beginning to end.You don't have to know anything(exept read)to understand them. A must for any automotive enthusiast.

Automotive service inspection maintenance repair

The book appears to indeed make a valiant attempt at explaining topics of automotive service. Unfortunately, in some cases it lacks real practicality when it comes to using the information in reality. Not enough information is available in some cases to really service your vehicle safely. It does cover a huge range of topics, which is really good, but I dont think a 30 word paragraph can really help someone properly repair or troubleshoot a component in a motor vehicle. The book is worth it (US$15) in the context of beginner training, but should not be bought for executing actual repairs, like what I did. That was a huge disappointment. This book also has a LOT of wonderful pictures and illustrations, which is indeed helpful. The author should NEVER have used some of the over-simplified illustrations, they only serve to confuse the issue. A beginner is likely to think the what they see in the book is exactly what is, in reality.

Dalrymple turns philosopher

I have to say that Theodore Dalrymple and David Stove have become my two favorite authors in recent years. Both of them do plenty of examination (and re-examination) of the nonsense which seems to be replacing Western culture as we knew it.

Make no mistake about it: Dalrymple is not trying to defend racial prejudice. He is attempting to grapple with old prejudices such as: "People should wait and get married before having children." This kind of bedrock commonsense lies at the foundation of civilization, and yet nowadays a huge number of people seem to think that this has become THEIR decision, and that they have a perfect right not only to have a child outside of marriage, but to have that child supported by government largesse.

Dalrymple's insight can be uncanny. While treating a prisoner who tried to impress him by bragging that he would "kill a child molester on sight," Dalrymple very gently turned the tables. "Do you have any children yourself?"

"Of course, doc. I've got three children."

"All from the same mother, then?"

"No, three different women."

"Do you visit your children often?"

"I can't. The mother won't allow it, and neither will her new boyfriend, doc."

"Do you imagine that she will have the same boyfriend in 2-3 years time?"

"No, doc, I can't see that happening."

End of conversation, but the prisoner is left confronting the fact that he is the child molester's most important ally, since fatherless children raised by a series of step-fathers are at very high risk. Perhaps for the first time in his life, he begins to wonder what happened to his early ambition, which was precisely to get married and create the sort of family he had never known. Unfortunately, drugs, drinking, and the criminal environment he lived in made that almost impossible, and what sealed the deal was the way he came to think of marriage and tradition: as stultifying bourgeois traps invented to imprison people who were not free spirits, like himself.

A closing thought: "You may choose to have children, but you may not choose to have them supported by me. I have children of my own."

That's just a taste of this very important book. Do yourself a favor and read it!

The Most Interesting Man in the World.

Well, Dr. Dalrymple is to me at any rate. I would place him solidly on my list of top five writers without any question. Indeed, I probably will read anything he ever writes on any subject. Yes, I agree with the other reviewers that this book is too short, but, being that it is part of a series called "Brief Encounters," this is to be expected.

Here our eminent retired psychiatrist demolishes a major cornerstone of political correctness. Specifically, it is the mandate that we be non-judgmental in regards to everyone and everybody--with the exception of those who are judgmental or prejudicial, of course. In their case, no fate is too severe. Dr. Dalrymple argues convincingly that a life without preconception is an impossibility; just as is truth without presupposition. To display prejudice once meant an individual had discernment, but now it means one has a variety of PC ism.

The influence of the sensitivity-at-all-costs gang has altered the world irreparably and for the worse. Dr. Dalrymple showcases this eventuality within a myriad of contexts. One of which is unconventionality which once equated with individuals being... unconventional. Yet now, the label has morphed into a compliment. This has led the avant-garde to undergo "the equivalent of an arms race," becoming more and more outlandish in order to satisfy the needs of their social clique. They always forget the truism that the only thing which never changes is the avant-garde.

No longer are politeness and civility integral to functional social relations. Making a spectacle of oneself in public can be lamentable but is deemed a sign of honesty and sincerity. No matter how out-of-control the person who "loses it" becomes his tantrum elucidates how true he is to his feelings. Asking him to show restraint would rob him of authenticity.

Numerous ornate phrases bejewel In Praise of Prejudice and my own favorite is "The Law of Conservation of Righteous Indignation." Dr. Dalrymple posits that a free-floating, constant mass of indignation among populations may be as intrinsic to humanity as our lust for fat and salt. We find that as old prejudices dissipate, new ones form to become repositories of animus. Tobacco is a perfect example. Once it was regarded merely as a vice but now outrage over its usage unites our elites. Our leaders then spray their sanctimonious acrimony upon the demon weed and whoever is foolish enough to pay the exorbitant taxes that allow them to smoke it. Yes, this is a brief encounter with Dr. Dalrymple, but, as always, it is one that leaves readers vastly enriched.

An Elegant Essay on Moral Philosohpy

Theodore Dalrymple is a moral essayist of generally very high standard, and although I would argue this isn't his best work, In Praise of Prejudice is a fundamental read regarding one of the most pressing issues of our time. To be more specific it is really a single essay in 29 parts that is a response to current trends in post-modern thought which have more than certainly influenced the bastions of our governance and culture, and from there have radiated into many slices of society if not all. The post modern quest to eliminate the sway of pre-conceived ideas is evident in the transmogrification of the word discrimination from the highest ideal of cultivated intelligence to one connotative of debased hatred, the narrowing of the concept of prejudice to negative prejudice only -in the colloquial sense-, and the esteem with which people boast of their "non-judgmentalism" as a badge of distinction and honor.

However Mr. Dalrymple argues persuasively that the elimination of traditional prejudice has not unlocked the human fulfillment of all desires so promised by the movement's godfathers, John Stuart Mill, Rousseau, and Bertrand Russell amongst the most luminary. Rather, pre-conceived notions are inexorably present in human nature, and cannot be eliminated but to be immediately, if unconsciously, replaced by others. The shedding of the accumulation of the wisdom of mankind (painfully imperfect as man himself and permanently tainted with Original Sin) has instead been replaced by a more feral nihilism and egotism, with moral squalor the result, and in the resulting chaotic (and "empty-headed" as opposed to open minded as one reviewer puts it so well) quest to slake all human desires fewer are sated and society is worse off overall.

A few drawbacks deny a fifth star to this otherwise elegant, concise, fundamental and compelling expose on the nature and necessity of morality and the pre-conceived notions it rests on. Sometimes the author can meander off into the bizarre and trivial simulated Socratic dialogues to make a point, such as his made up argument with someone who believes the Pacific Ocean is made of brie. Other times his chain of thought can have some ghostly thin links. Last he can sometimes write some very overly punctuated and confusing sentences.

Despite these flaws this is a book that is important to read and understand, although very high-brow which may put off a lot of readers. A civilization based on freedom and liberty depends on the authority of the morality of its citizens lest it devolve to the basis of authoritarian government to compensate for that morality's evaporation. Theodore Dalrymple shows that the morality necessary for freedom rests on prejudices, which must be evaluated, reviewed and improved as time progresses, but which not only can not but should not be eliminated in spite of their inherent imperfectability.
