About the Author
Konrad B. Krauskopf was born and raised in Madison, Wisconsin and earned a B.S. in chemistry from University of Wisconsin in 1931. He then earned a Ph.D. in chemistry at the University of California in Berkeley. When the Great Depression made jobs in chemistry scarce, Professor Krauskopf decided to study geology, which had long fascinated him. Through additional graduate work at Stanford University, he earned a second Ph.D. and eventually a position on the Stanford faculty. He remained at Stanford until his retirement in 1976. During his tenure, Professor Krauskopf also worked at various times with the U.S. Geological Survey, served with the U.S. army in occupied Japan, and traveled to Norway, France, and Germany on sabbatical leaves. His research interests included field work on granites and metamorphic rocks and laboratory study on applications of chemistry to geologic problems, especially the formation of ore deposits. In recent years, Professor Krauskopf had spent time working with various government agencies on the problem of radioactive waste disposal.

"Scholars" refuse to re-write the text books to the correct system of science which is called the Reciprocal Systems (2); it started with the Dewey Larson's formulation of Space and Time as the units of Motion; Motion being the single force of everything. It was expanded after his death, and it unifies absolutely everything in Science.

But there is a conspiracy. "They" would rather have us think that science is still searching. It was complete long ago.

Affordable Used Copy

I bought this to go along with the online edition we had to purchase for my class. I was required to get the 16th edition for my online book, but this edition is nearly identical so most of the time I just use this. There was about $100 price difference between the two editions, and call me old-fashioned, but I often just like to hold an actual book in my hand instead reading it online. For less than $20, this used copy was perfect.

A Fresh Look at a Beautiful Subject

This is by far THE BEST textbook on the subject. As many people say, thermodynamics is a subject that one has to learn at least three times. I can easily understand the very negative review from the undergraduate student at Berkely. The subject itself is hard, and simply is not for everyone, not for the first run at least. I say this from experience. I earned a Ph.D. degree over ten years ago, and took courses on thermodynamics at both undergraduate and graduate levels. I didn't understand the subject at all, and didn't find much use in my thesis work. However, something about the subject has kept me going back to it ever since. I now own about 40 books on the subject, and use the ideas almost daily in my research. I discovered Kittel-Kroemer only recently, and have found it absolutely great. The book took an unconventional approach, as the authors explained well in the Preface and the Introduction. This approach makes the central concept, the entropy, as well as the derived ideas, the temperature, the chemical potential and the Boltzmann factor, so clear that one has to wonder why they are obscure in many other books. I find this approach the most direct and satisfying. The book contains a wonderful collection of examples. The book is written with authority and great care. It is beautifully produced, and a joy to read. (My copy hasn't fall apart, and doesn't look it ever will!) If there is a new edition, I'd like to see more links to thermodybnamics in practice. Some rudimentary description of measurements of basic quantities will further enhance the book. A few device examples, in addition to the battery, will help to make the connection. The beautiful logic structure notwithstanding, thermodyanmics is an experimental sceince. Some quantities are easy to calculate, others are easy to measure. The division of labor, an idea so natural in research and everyday life, is often missed in textbooks.
I recommend this book most strongly, and wish more people will discover its beauty.

Unclear and unhelpful

As a textbook for an undergraduate course on thermal physics, this offering is quite poor. The authors lack the gift of clearly communicating their (obviously quite good) understanding of thermal physics; the writing, particularly when explaining what should be simple concepts, is dense and opaque. Figures often function as nothing more than page-fillers, and do not serve to clarify the text. Important results are scattered, in many cases not even set off from the main text with any sort of visual cue. The problems for each section (and the text itself) will frequently bring in detailed information from other areas of physics or chemistry without making any attempt to explain its relation to the subject at hand. The authors often use the problems as extensions to the text, adding a half page of extraneous commentary after asking a question that takes a single line to state. As another reviewer remarked, the problems in general can take an hour to interpret and five minutes to solve. Overall, the book is very wordy when it doesn't need to be, confusing, and difficult to use.

If you are an undergraduate taking a first class in thermal physics, it will be a tremendous chore to learn it from this book.

Great review but hard to learn from!

I used this book for a junior/senior level undergrad physics course (for majors). The professor loved the book however many of the students, with only exposure to Halliday/Resnick/Krane intro physics, found it difficult to follow the abbreviated treatment of stat-mech... there seemed to be a large gap between the 2 approaches! With a good professor this can be an excellent text but beware...you may find yourself needing supplementary texts such as Reif's "Statistical & Thermal Physics" and even his Berkeley Series sophomore level "statistical Physics" for an explanation of concepts.

Nicholas M. Teich is a licensed social worker pursuing a Ph.D. in social policy at Brandeis University. A member of the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, he trains and educates groups about gender issues and is the founder and president of Camp Aranu'tiq, the first-ever summer camp for transgender children.

Not fully representative of the diversity of transgender identity: Transsexual does not equal transgender

I was dismayed and deeply disappointed to discover that a book named "Transgender 101" should in fact be called "Transsexual 101." This book had the potential to be the new go-to education source on transgender identity, but instead it joins a time-honored tradition of treating transsexual identity as the only truly valid transgender form.

If you read this book, I strongly urge you to do additional reading on the experiences and needs of non-transsexual transgender people, such as genderqueer folks.

As someone who does transgender education work myself, I firmly believe this field has progressed to a point where we can finally have nuanced conversations about the varying ways that people identify, experience, and express their gender. There is no excuse for a text that covers such wonderfully broad ground and important topics to not integrate the incredible diversity of gendered experience into its entirety, rather than relegating "cross-dressers, genderqueer people, drag queens, and other lesser-known types of transgenderism" to its final chapter.

As if it wasn't bad enough to basically treat non-transsexual transgender people as a footnote, Teich adds insult to injury by portraying such folks flippantly (for example, using an insulting Kleenex analogy in chapter 1). The message is clear: the real transgender people are transsexuals.

Results of NGLTF's national transgender discrimination survey show that a third of all transgender people identify as gender variant or gender nonconforming, and almost a quarter identify as genderqueer. Genderqueer people were more likely to have experienced physical or sexual assault, to be uncomfortable seeking police assistance, and to have put off medical care due to fear of discrimination. It's time to start respecting this segment of the transgender population and speak to our experiences and needs. Nick Teich, unfortunately, has set the field back.

Finally a true Transgender 101 book!

The title of this book says it all. Whether you are transgendered, a student of human sexuality and gender identity, or have a loved one who is transgendered and wish to understand them fully, this book is an extremely easy and informative read on the subject of transgender people and transsexuality. Transgender 101 includes basic definitions regarding the transgender community, the transitioning process, coming out to family friends and the general public, a history of transgender's and transsexuals in past and present societies as well as the history of transgender standards of care, the controversial issue in the mental disorder vs. medical condition, discrimination and hate crimes against the transgender community, and lesser known varieties of transgender individuals; this book has introductions to all the basic topics surrounding transgender people. Transgender 101 is a great first read for anyone interested in gaining knowledge about possibly the most misunderstood community in modern society. Like I said, this book should be used as an introductory read only, for more detail about transgender's additional reading is definitely required, but Nicholas Teich has done an outstandingly terrific job on introducing transgender's to the world in "Transgender 101: A Simple Guide To A Complex Issue".

Nicholas begins each chapter by asking broad, sweeping questions about identity, expression, and society that immediately involve the reader in the discussion. Once he has them hooked, he slowly narrows the scope of his answers, easing readers into understanding the relevant definitions in such a way that it feels they arrived there of their own accord. He's not preachy or overbearing, and wisely shies away from absolutes - instead, he presents suggestions and conclusions, but leaves interpretation open to the reader.

Along the way, Nicholas offers a series of small, simple, easy-to-understand graphs and tables that help readers to visualise the concepts he's talking about. I was immediately struck by how effectively they compliment the text, flowing naturally from his words, as opposed to jumping out at you like the high-brow, statistical monstrosities of a more scholarly tome. He's also generous with his cartoons, using them to further engage the reader by making light of the prejudices and stereotypes those of in the community face every day. They're the kind of two-or-three panel cartoons that make you chuckle, stop yourself short, rethink what's actually been said, and then come away with a comfortable smile.

As I said earlier, this is also a fascinating read for those of us within the community, effectively raising questions and prompting discussion about assumptions we've always taken for granted, but have never really thought through. He manages to challenge the most deeply held personal beliefs in such a way that you don't feel confronted, but instead welcome the chance to give the issue some thought. I'm a bit of a hoarder, one who likes her books to sit on the shelf well-read by looking unread. Having said that, my copy is proudly dog-eared and underlined throughout with passages that struck me as either inspirational or challenging.

At just under 150 pages (with the last 25 comprising a glossary, index, and appendices), it's a quick, inviting read that won't raise eyebrows or induce sighs of exasperation when you share it with friends. It's a book that' definitely more gift and less burden, and one that I fully intend to leave on my coffee table, not just to prompt discussion or educate guests, but to keep at-hand for my own personal reflection.

About the Author
Gary E. Kessler received his Ph.D. from Columbia University where he studied philosophy and comparative religions. After teaching at Bard College, he accepted a position at California State University, Bakersfield where he taught for over thirty years. His most recent research centers on religion and violence. He is the author of numerous articles and books, including VOICES OF WISDOM, which, when first published in 1992, was the first multicultural textbook and reader intended for use in an introductory philosophy class.

Book needs cleaning

The book was in reasonable condition, but had a bunch of stickers. I pulled them off and used Melaleuca oil to remove the glue. Looks a lot better and the essential oil cleaned the cover of smudging. Please clean your books.

While having nothing to compare it to as this is my first stab at learning about Philosophy, I enjoy it. It is well written and I appreciate the diverse perspective it offers. It expands its focus beyond the beliefs and views of the Greek philosophers. The author includes the views of female philosophers as well as a multitude of cultural perspectives.

I won't profess to assume what did or did not happen in this case. I can tell you that the mountain of documentation compiled in this case and the duration of the alleged possession and the eye wittness accounts and audio tapes reveal an otherworldly and evil influence.

I found myself being emapthetic to Anneliese's boyfriend, who witnessed this dramatic transformation and the 5 stages of possession that eventually consumed her life. I don't think it unusual that the demonic interact with us daily, we are simply blind to the subtle signs of evidence. Murder, drug addiction, child pornorgraphy, hypersexual addiction, alcoholism, rape, incest, all have their roots in a spiritual dysfunction associated with societal norms. We appear appalled at these actions, yet, all have been in existence for centuries.

You will find yourself re-reading portions of the transcripts and attempting to better understand the yo-yo effect of improvement and sudden deterioration of Anneliese. It is frustrating to fight with her through the book and reach such an empty resolution to the conflict. Anneliese loses her physical battle, her spiritual battle is a victory.

I found this story to be true, for the Faith of Ms Anneliese is so unbelievably strong! Her suffering was so much as to bring her to death, but she wanted the world to know there are still demons to reckon with. I would recommend this story to anyone.

Extremely useful to all masons

This book is flat out the best book for any mason to have. Even if your not interested in becoming an officer it is still very handy for understanding why we do the things that we do, and more importantly HOW we do them. Naturally every jurisdiction has their own versions, so this should be considered a guide to the concepts NOT the transcript of the right way; "Right" is what ever your grand lodge says is right.
