Overrated, extremely light on content

I rarely review books, but this one was such a waste that I'd feel guilty if I didn't at least TRY to persuade you not to buy. The main problem with the book, as other reviewers have alluded to, is that it sort of tries to BE a design masterpiece rather than teach you. The design is interesting, but it is to the point that the content is subordinated to the design. There are maybe 5 pages worth of useful content.

Another irritant to me is that this is by far the most commercial book I've ever seen (more ads than a magazine). It seemed that every few pages I was being told to buy this book, or buy all of some other guys books. There is a two page section that is taken from Guy Kawasaki's blog. The whole thing is incredibly derivative (but shallow).

Finally, and this I can take responsibility for, it didn't meet my needs because I am not Al Gore, nor am I the CEO of a company. If I gave a presentation in the style of this book I'd be laughed out of the office. I'm an analyst, and the warm and fuzzy slides would not be good. Duarte's advice on data intensive slides? "Both [of Stephen Few's] books should be on your shelf along with everything Edward Tufte has written."
I have two Tufte books and they are virtually identical, I don't see myself buying his others (and they suffer from the same lack of relevance to corporate analysts). Disappointing.

Yet another designer's book

I have to rain on the parade of this book and Garr Reynold's book (and other ones).

The message is "I'm one of the best slide designers in the world (which is true) and I'm going to show you WHY."

The message should be "I'm one of the best slide designers in the world and I'm going to show you HOW."

You'll see plenty to interest you, but unless you're a full-fledged graphic designer you'll never recreate these slides. Imagine putting this book (and the Reynold's book) into a room with some of your worst slide creators, or even yourself. Would you see an improvement in their skills? I doubt it.

You might as well become a painter by reading books that have the world's greatest pictures in them. Even though there is explanatory text here it isn't enough to bridge the gap.

To see a book written for its audience, try the "Before and After" books by Jon McWade which deal with desktop publishing. Unfortunately John has not yet tackled slides, but you can see an page layout idea and make it yourself in minutes.

So, sorry about this, because both this and Reynold's book are "nice" books. The energy has gone into the book's design and production rather than the content. But that makes them coffee-table books, and unless you have a coffee table in your office I'd advise that you give both of them a miss.

Good tips in a quick-to-read format

The popular reviews on here seem to be the ones that give this book a lower rating. I'm not a professional designer type of person so perhaps I'm less of a purist and just in it for the joy of learning about presentations. I found the book to be a quick read and I liked that. There were some other reviews about this being low on content or too PowerPoint-related. Yes, it is called Slide:ology but it's not a PowerPoint book. The information was easy to digest as opposed to some books that want to expand on their points so much simply for the sake of filling space.

As someone just looking to improve my presentation style, this was a good book to read, although I started reading The Naked Presenter based on another review and have found that to be the book to get. That said, what stood out for me in this book were the following chapters and points:

- Chapter 4: Displaying Data
I thought that there were great tips in here about how to display data and charts in general. These tips are not PowerPoint-specific and can be referred to for any application you're using to generate graphs. For example, some useful recommendations were to wlways start your first data set for a pie chart at the 12 o'clock position, remove the legend and move the key into the graph, and use color to highlight what you really want viewers to focus on in the graph.

- Chapter 5: Arranging Elements
There was a lot of useful information about laying slides out in a grid. Some of the useful tips from here were: when using images of people, make sure that they are looking at the content instead of looking away, or fleeing it; and that leaving the top and bottom rows in a 5x5 grid creates a more cinematic feeling while providing space for titles and similar information.

- Chapter 7: Using Visual Elements
This chapter reminds you to think of your slide like a billboard and ask yourself whether your message can be processed effectively within 3 seconds. It also reminded me that my logo doesn't need to appear on every slide -- the people who have come to hear you speak most likely know who you work for.

- Chapter 9: Creating Movement
This inspired me to add some slight movement to a presentation I was working on. It educated me on the ability to use transitions between two slides to create a timeline effect, especially when there is information that can span two slides.

- Chapter 11: Interacting with Slides
It was here that I learned that hitting the "b" key during a PowerPoint slideshow would turn the screen to black so that the speaker can have the focus on them.

- Chapter 12: Manifesto: The Five Theses of the Power of a Presentation
My favorite of the five theses is "Practice design, not decoration". I think that sums up the book nicely.

I've been reading a few books on similar topics. They all have a good deal of overlap, but I think there's value in reading some of the same things over again in order to better reinforce them. This book is such a quick and easy read with well-done visuals and good tips that I don't agree with the harsh reviews given to it by others.

Gloria J. Browne-Marshall is an assistant professor at John Jay College of Criminal Justice (City University of New York), where she teaches courses in constitutional law, evidence, and race and the law. A former civil rights litigator, Professor Browne-Marshall has published several articles on criminal justice, civil rights, and international human rights issues. She holds an M.A. from the University of Pennsylvania and a J.D. from St. Louis University School of Law.

GREAT Professor

Prof. Marshall is an AWESOME professor and very knowledgeable. She knows her stuff and inspires her students to engage
in making a difference and get involved in current issues. If you are not sure of what you want to do with your education she
will assist you in exploring and figuring out how to excel, and will definitely inspire you to succeed. I can appreciate a professor
who really cares about the students and making sure they get the most out of their education. Her favorite saying is, "take advantage of everything
that the world has to offer". I would recommend all John Jay students to take her 400 level class, especially if you are looking
to go to law school and become a lawyer!! Prof. Marshall is the BEST!!!

I'm looking to add a CNC machine to my woodshop. When adding any new tool to the shop you have to be able to justify the cost. This book gave me a better understanding of the CNC process. I'm now confident that I can get consistent, quality results out of a Shapeoko or any other "DIY" CNC machine at a justifiable price.
Being new to CNC, one of the biggest worries is how to easily transfer my vision into a finished product. This book will give you a better understanding of that process.

Great for beginners, but too little, too late for me.

If you are just getting started with CNC, this book will be very useful to you. Unfortunately during the 18 months between the announcement of this book, (I ordered it the day it was announced) I managed to learn much of the same information though trial and error. Had this book been shipped at the time it was announced, it would have been extremely useful. If you have not yet started building or using you machine, but want a small CNC in your shop, this will be useful too you. But if things like UGS, Chilipeppr, and Flight of Ideas are already in your lexicon, you may not need this book.

I wasted a lot of time, and experienced a lot of frustration that this book would have eliminated. It is unfortunate that it took so long for the publisher to get it out to customers.

Just the basics

This is a very clear and concise 141-page book that will be very helpful for anyone just getting started with computer-controlled carving of wood, with a few things applicable to other types of CNC. Ford has kept the Shapoko infomercials to a minimum, and included the most important material. I would like to have seen more detail (and a fatter book) on several occasions. But waiting for the book to be published, I learned a lot elsewhere and am no longer the ideal target audience for this book. The book has a few small technical mistakes, but is generally well written and useful.

Smith suffered from depression and alcohol and drug addiction, and these topics appear frequently in his music. In Torment Saint, William Todd Schultz has written his own kind of love song—an account of Smith’s life that does full justice to his memory and the impressive legacy of his art. Schultz makes good on the promise of his subtitle by focusing on the life of Elliot Smith—largely ignoring the cottage industry of lurid speculation about the circumstances of the songwriter’s violent death in 2003. He doesn’t dwell unduly on his subject’s depression, his darkness, or his inability to recognize his own talent and innate goodness. Those traits were, of course, integral to Elliott’s personality, but they aren’t the final word on his life, and so Torment Saint is both a persuasive reckoning with Elliott’s inner demons and –much more important—a full appreciation, and celebration, of his undeniable genius. —Rhett Miller

A solid swing but a tragic miss

It seems to me that there are a lot of slanted reviews on here for this book so I'm going to preface mine by admitting that I have no connection to Elliott Smith other than simply being a big fan. And to be fair, I've been a fan since about 1998 and I love his music but that's my only connection to the musician himself. I've no connection to anyone in his life, his circle, his family or to the author. So for what it's worth, this review is coming from a fan of the music and that's where my interests begin and end.

My first impression of this book was the unbearable way Elliott's lyrics were woven into the narrative of the book. Others have mentioned it and it's the most obvious flaw. And unfortunately the one that makes the book tough to take seriously regularly throughout the entirety of it....all the way down to the last chapter.

A pretty typical example:

"Figure 8 also unpacks a conspicuous army-related theme, the generals, sergeants, non-commissioned officers all showing up at different junctures. A sergeant, for instance, breaks the key off in a lock in "Color Bars," pinning Elliott in the place he comes from. Veiled suicide references appear as everyone wants Elliott to ride into the sunset but he battles back, for the moment, declaring, 'I ain't gonna go down," a phrase he was drawn to as a symbol of giving up and losing all hope..." and continues later on with, "He's an army man, ordered to march where he stands, as a "dead enemy" springs and wails in his face."

This type of narrative, literally interpreting Elliott's lyrics and weaving them into the story, continues throughout the book and is, at times, unbearable and very much cringeworthy at times.

We're told by Elliott himself in his many interviews that the lyrics are mostly metaphors and little stories, not autobiographical (even the book mentions this through a few Elliott quotes) yet the author does his best to literally interpret those and directly apply them to Elliott's life, the situations he was dealing with and the people in his life. And many times, it's not just a stretch, it's downright laughable. And it's a shame.

The comparisons to Kurt Cobain are a bit of a stretch...any fan of Elliott would tell you that, yet there is a fairly substantial amount of time spent discussing the two.

Another obvious questionable part: If you believe the author and his sources, much of Elliott's lyrics were written by a friend from his high school years, back when he was 15:

"A little known fact about Roman Candle - indeed, about all of Elliott's albums up to and including small sections of 2000's Figure 8 - is that high school friend Garrick Duckler's lyrics continued to make regular appearances....sometimes the words weren't even (Elliott's); if they were anyone's diary, they were Duckler's....In total, Duckler estimates that somewhere around two to four lines of his (lyrics) resurface in roughly every other song of Elliott's up to around the year 2000.

So again, the author is attempting to interpret Elliott's lyrics and ascribe them to his life while at the same time we're led to believe that, at least up until 2000, they're so impersonal that Elliott didn't even write many of those lyrics himself.

Sounds farfetched but I think the main thing to consider is that the author spoke with only the people who were willing to speak to him. And, in using that approach, he spoke to many of the wrong people: Those looking to take credit for some of Elliott's success, ex-girlfriends with axes to grind, people who had known him long before he became the person that his fans grew to know. And that's a fatal flaw in trying to piece together an image of someone who is no longer with us.

For instance, the author also seems to have an issue with a woman named Valerie, an ex-girlfriend of Elliott. The author mentions that he tried to connect with her in writing the book and that possibly she wasn't interested in talking. There are many situations in the books where she is used as a target and portrayed as a bad person or influence on Elliott. I feel like that backfired because in the end, it was obvious that there were personal issues here at play, a glaring reminder that this book is a collection of opinions more than anything else with a specific message to promote.

The last part of the book is focused (nay, dedicated) to defending Jennifer Chiba as not having a role in Elliott's untimely death. And that really spoke volumes in terms of where the entire book seemed to be suspiciously headed. So a questionable end to a mediocre book, unfortunately. And when I closed the back cover, it struck me...this was a book written about Elliott by someone who didn't even appear to be a fan. And certainly a true fan wouldn't have put together a narrative like this.

Afterward, I mostly just felt sorry for Elliott's parents, family and real friends. Elliott is spoken about by the author like he's some THING rather than a person. Elliott was a son, a brother, a best friend. And that's the most unfortunate part to feel as an outsider. Certainly if he were still alive, I imagine this book would represent everything he was against and, as a fan, it's tough to stomach the idea that I waded through it and then came to that conclusion.

Ultimately, so much of the book is taken from interviews that you can read elsewhere on the internet: youtube, etc. I think those are the most interesting parts of the book and they're available readily online. And that's kind of the thing here: If you really want to piece together an accurate image of Elliott's life, base that on the words from the man himself, not on an unauthorized biography.

At some point, we, as fans, need to step back and quash the curiosity because it's encouraging projects that like that try to peer into places that really should be forgotten, full of interviews with people who were disconnected from Elliott for years, people with specific agendas and the wrong list of folks.

The music was always the message anyway...it spoke for itself. Elliott said in his own words it's for the listener to put together and decide what they're about. If you respect Elliott as a musician and human, then it's fair enough to end it on that note.

A devoted but flawed biography.

William Todd Schultz biography of Elliott Smith is not particularly definitive, though it at least attempts to fill an obvious void in well-researched accounts of his life; many readers having been unsated by Benjamin Nugent's previous attempt that seemed rushed to publication shortly after Smith's death. One of the key strengths of this book is its supremely fine focus on Smith's early years growing up in Dallas, followed by the move to Portland and his time with Heatmiser. The detail and insight in this first half of the book is captivating, with regard to both the development of the man and his music.

The only drawback in this first half, one which occurs throughout the book, is Schultz's use of lyric snippets from Smith's songs to garnish some particular moment, explicitly referencing which song that lyrics derives from every time this device is employed. This tactic, used far too frequently to retain any charm, quickly begins to grate and distract from the text.

The second half of the book, starting around the release of the self titled album, meditates on that album's preoccupation with heroin by someone who at that point was not a user. This is an intriguing observation, but it also marks the starting point of a narrative shift. The complexity of the subject slowly begins to dilute into that of a tortured genius gradually plummeting towards death. Who constructs this narrative? Schultz is the author, but he is not entirely responsible for this. For one, what Schultz has at his disposal is ultimately sparse. All he can rely is the music, published interviews, and oral histories from friends and collaborators, and then only those willing to share. Several members of Smith's family and other intimate relations did not talk to Schultz and it is doubtful they will ever talk to anyone about him on record. It is also not much of an exaggeration to say that Smith crafted or bought into this narrative himself, and began to mold himself around it. This has the potential to inhibit and sabotage objective or open attempts at biography.

It is not impossible, though, to subvert the "tortured artist" narrative, whether Smith purposefully adhered to it or not. The best biographies aspire to and sometimes succeed in holding the subject in question, in order to uproot mythos and to create the most fully realized representation possible. Edmund White's biography of Jean Genet and Jon Lee Anderson's biography of Che Guevara come to mind. Schultz, his background in psychology, would seem more apt than any rock historian to attempt such a feat, but that does not come to pass here.

Smith transforms in Schlutz's book from tortured genius to junkie savant, becoming more and more a flat character, the book petering out into speculation for ten or so pages about the nature of his death. Though the question is pertinent, Schultz adamant and drawn out conclusion of suicide cloyingly reiterates Smith's lifelong despondency and diverges into apologia for Jennifer Chiba, who in the end is significant to Elliott's life, though these last pages in the book hardly deal with Elliott at all. He is talking about a death scenario, a woman caught in its devastating aftermath, and a knife. The knife serving as a maudlin if not insulting metaphor of an existential wound, because the metaphor nearly negates the importance of the music, oversimplifies the man, and dampens what could have been a potentially great biography. Smith's narrative is simply hard to navigate in and of itself, one that may never be fully uncovered, but what the budding lineage of his biographies indicate is that the possibility for illuminating interpretations is there. Schultz's addition is flawed but devoted, a cracked light bulb.

A Diary That Went Public

Unlike the recent documentary, Torment Saint brings Elliott Smith into focus as a true American artist who made music simply because he loved music and was passionately moved by the musicians he admired. I've read a lot of biographies in my life, but with the advent of YouTube at my disposal, reading these words while at the same time being able to listen to and watch all the performances and songs was exciting and inspiring. As a musician, myself, I understood the passion Elliott had for recording right from the start... his urgency to tape everything that popped into his head while the concept was still fresh and alive... the scuffling about - so young - from Radio Shacks to musicians' clearance houses trying to find any old equipment he could use - anything that would get the job done there and then... duplicating homemade cassettes and inserts with original art and photographs... trying to get those cassettes into the right hands.

Schultz's empathic, compassionate style is warm and heartfelt throughout; he made me smell the Portland rain and the NYC dive bars... he made me ebb and flow with Elliott's highs and lows. He introduced me to all of his friends, his family and musicians - the characters and stories that inspired his songs. He knew Elliott lived his songs and the lyrics were his life story.

Elliott lived a short life that was filled to over-flow with experiences that take most of us a lifetime to have. He was focused because he knew who he was and what he wanted to do; he knew his limitations and understood his talent and his shortcomings. Unlike most of the megastars today, he played all of his instruments and wrote, sang and performed his tracks. There was no pretending; he didn't care if he fit in, he didn't care if he was a hit. He just knew what to do, how to do it and got it done.

(BUT IT WAS SO FUNNY TO SEE THE WIDE EYES ON THE BOYS FACES JUST BECAUSE THEY SO LOVED THOSE ANIMALS & THE LARGER THAN LIFE COLORS USED IN THIS LITTLE BOOK. I HAD TO KEEP SAYING CARSON READ.... Motivating and Funny

Jerry Pallotta and David Biedrzycki have created a wonderfully motivating story about teamwork through the guise of a problem for Santa. Santa can't possibly deliver all the toys by himself. Each animal he tries has a different strength and weakness. The drawings in this picture book are outstanding. The hidden facts are wonderful (penquins may flap, but they can't learn to fly).There is wonderful alliteration and funny puns ("I gave the skunks a try. It was a smelly idea!) The kids I've read it to rolled in the aisle laughing at the picture of Santa's candy cane underwear! It's a great book for children of all ages!

25,550 Ball Bearings!

Before you can lead and coach others, says Steve Brown, you must learn how to lead yourself. So what would that look like? Steve enlightens us with eight memorable insights in this terrific book.

It’s packed with the practical—like “The Cycle of Grief” chart on page 51 and its antidote on page 53, “The Cycle of Grace.” It’s original—know anyone who hangs a poster copy of Rembrandt’s “The Prodigal” by their front door? And—it’s inspirational.

I made a ton of inspirational notes that I planned to share with you, but then I read Chapter 8, and found the big idea for me (and maybe you). Read this excerpt and you’ll be telling this story to family and friends all year!

EXCERPTED FROM CHAPTER 8: STEWARDSHIP AND SHALOM

“Teach me to number my days aright so that I may gain a heart of wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12)

Steve Brown writes:

People sometimes do strange things. After my first residential session as a participant in the Arrow Leadership Program, my roommate went home and made a very strange purchase. He bought 25,550 ball bearings.

The natural question is, why? Why would anyone buy 25,550 ball bearings? Well, there is a method to what may seem like my roommate’s madness. The answer is profound. During that first Arrow residential session, my roommate had a transformational experience. He was deeply moved by the needs in the world. He was also awed by God’s particular call on his life to be part of his mission in this chapter of history. Finally, he was convicted that God wants everyone to carefully steward their limited time on this earth.

His prayer was the same as the psalmist’s in Psalm 90:12: “Teach me to number my days aright so that I may gain a heart of wisdom.”

So, when my roommate got back home, he took the psalmist’s prayer literally. He wanted to number his days aright. To do so, he did some basic math. He estimated his lifespan to be 70 years and multiplied 70 years x 365 days. This comes out to 25,550 days of life.

Although my roommate knew that this timeframe wasn’t guaranteed and that his days are ultimately held in God’s hands, he was still moved by this research. He wanted to brainstorm creative ways to tangibly and visually mark this precious and finite amount of time. So, he purchased 25,550 ball bearings. With each ball bearing representing a day of his life, he counted out all the days he had already lived.

Then he put the ball bearings representing days already lived into a large jar. The rest of the ball bearings were put in another jar that represented days not yet lived. Then he began a morning ritual.

Every morning he would go over to the jar of days not yet lived, pick out one ball bearing and place it in his pocket. This one ball bearing was a tangible reminder of his responsibility to steward each day that God gives him on this earth.

At the end of each day, he completed the ritual. He would take the ball bearing out of his pocket and place it in the jar representing completed days. It served as a visual reminder that each day given is a gift and resource to steward for God’s glory. Once a day is gone, it is gone forever.

My Arrow roommate eventually stopped this ritual, but he recently told me that the jars still sit on his shelf as a visual reminder.

This story has had a profound effect on my life. We ultimately don’t know how many days we have in this life. Today could be the last one. Maybe there are thousands left. Whatever the number, this story is a vivid reminder that we are called to be stewards of this special gift of time.

“As Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 4:2, ‘Now, it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.’ In other words, leading yourself well means being a steward of the trust given to you. This trust is magnified for Christian leaders who are given opportunities to leverage not only their own talents but also the talents given to others.

“When I put the ball bearing illustration together with these stewardship verses, I am both convicted and inspired to wisely invest the gift of time entrusted to me. I am overwhelmed by the truth that God invites us to be part of his work and purposes. For these reasons, one of the key elements of leading ourselves is stewarding our time.”

A great resource for personal growth and daily challenges! Steve's practices have also been beneficial as I introduce and demonstrate them to those I am leading as well. The reflections questions at the end of chapter allows for the leader to go home and continue to challenge themselves towards greatness! After finally getting to visit the city of Hyderabad - the former capital of India's largest princely state - this summer, I became interested in reading John Zubrzycki's The Last Nizam: An Indian Prince In The Australian Outback.

The first 150 or so pages summarises the history of the first 7 of Hyderabad's 8 dynastic rulers, their battles, their lifestyle, and their dealings with the British who had a strong controlling influence on their state for a number of centuries. The author writes about this period informatively, but not interestingly.

In 1947, when India became independent, Hyderabad and the other more than 500 princely states were left by the departing British to face an uncertain future. Zubrycki describes Hyderabad's somewhat violent incorporation into the new nation of India and the subsequent fate of the Asaf Jah dynasty (led by its Nizams) that had ruled it for many centuries. This is where his book begins to become more of a pleasure to read.

As predicted by a fakir during the life of the first Nizam, the death of the 7th Nizam marked the absolute end of the dynasty's rule. What was it that might have helped fulfil this prediction? It might have been the incorporation of Hyderabad into a then socialist-leaning nation. The 8th Nizam's preference for things mechanical as opposed to matters regal was not conducive to the continuance of a dynasty, nor was preferring to live on a desolate farm in Australia rather than in one of his palaces in Hyderabad. The factors that led to things falling apart in the former princely state are described in the chapters in the book, which are largely dedicated to the life of the 8th Nizam, with whom the author has met and become well-acquainted. These chapters help rescue a book, which began by holding my attention poorly, to become quite interesting.

Undoubtedly, this is an important book for anyone interested in the history of the princely states, but possibly not the most riveting history book ever written.

Strangely absent from American bookstores

The only nit I will pick is the author's belaboring of accounting details pertaining to the finances of the last Nizam. Otherwise, this book is a very readable, interesting, and valuable history of princely Hyderabad, with a fascinating biography of the last of the line, taking us with him right up to recent years. My wife brought this book back from a trip to Pakistan; otherwise, I never would have been treated to it, since American booksellers have for some very bad reason chosen not to distribute it. If you can find it, read it!
