A Good Overview of Ichnofossils and Their Implications

Richard G. Bromley has provided the geologist with a good summary of ichnofossils and their implications. He tells us how trace fossils can better be recognized in the field. A list of references is available for further study.

Bromley describes some trace fossils in significant detail. For example, Zoophycus has branches having diameters that change with distance, and he interprets this as the growth of the organism that constructed this trace fossil.

He discusses several classifications of trace fossils, for example the stratinomic classifications of Seilacher and Martinsson. He always defines the terms he uses (for example, cubichnia for resting traces).

Bromley also puts ichnofossils into a paleoenvironmental context. He repeatedly stresses oxygen in the sediment as a major limiting factor that constrains the burrowing behaviors of benthic organisms. He elaborates on the tiering of ichnofossil assemblages, and also provides an overview of ichnofabric analysis. Finally, he cites some measurements of the rate of reworking of sediment by modern benthic organisms.

Like the rest of the world, I have to deal with my strengths and weaknesses in my own unique manner. Many people look at the amount of accomplishments I have managed to achieve in my short life and are amazed that someone who is disabled could have done so much.

Yet I am constantly thinking of how much more there is to do! And if I sat around and spent all of my precious time labeling myself with words like "disabled" and "handicapped," I’d be too busy to ever do anything productive. That is why I say that, in a way, we are ALL disabled. But how?

Don’t we all have some area in which we need help?

What about the computer illiterate who panics every time his computer makes a noise, opens an extra window, sends him an "error" message, crashes, or freezes up? In today’s technological age, this is definitely a disability that is likely to affect his job performance, his level of proficiency, and perhaps even the security of his very career.

What about the person with extremely poor vision who years to be a fighter pilot, or fly domestic flights for United or Delta? Without corrective surgery, and perhaps even with it, their hopes of achieving their dreams are less than zero.

And what about the would-be athlete who wants nothing less in life than to be an Olympic athlete, a star quarterback, or a diva figure skater—but who just doesn’t have the physical skills needed to achieve his or her dreams? After all, professional sports requires more than just heart, drive, and desire. It requires coordination, hand-to-eye skills, visual acuity, and in many cases, very specific physical requirements. After all, it would be difficult for a 6’4", 220-pound woman to be a petite figure skater, while it would be almost impossible for a 5’2", 12-pound man to be a defensive lineman for the New York Jets—or the next Michael Jordan!

Vision, hearing, and coordination problems. Weight, height, physical fitness. Intelligence, IQ, the money to go to a good college. Nationality, race, religion. Fear, weakness, depression. All of these, and the list goes on and on, are disabilities of some sort. Hidden though they may be, and not labeled a specific name or definition such as cerebral palsy, they are nonetheless real and legitimate disabilities that people face on a day-to-day basis.

My best friend in college once compared me to someone that was too short to reach the top shelf in the kitchen. She said that my shakes and the help I needed was no different than the short person who needed help reaching the top shelf. And she was right.

All of us have weakness that must be dealt with, just like my shakes and someone else’s shortness. When this happens, a disability occurs. Plain and simple. We all have them, we all deal with them, it’s a part of life. It’s how we react to those disabilities, it’s how we break down the barriers they present, or work our way around them, over them, or through them, that determines how big or little those disabilities are.

Same Aspiration, Different Journey to Get There

The book chronicles Robin’s journey through high school and college towards obtaining his CPA degree. The book is a powerful testament of one man’s strong desire to fulfill a long-held wish that produces many fortunate and unfortunate experiences along the way. Robin has a positive view of the world and sees his fortunate experiences as blessings and the less than fortunate experiences as opportunities for his own personal growth and development. He does a beautiful job in sharing lessons learned; and, the practice exercises following each chapter adds an element of interactivity for the reader.

Awesome book on HIIT

I enjoyed readuing this book. Especially with summer just around the corner, I need to get in shape and this book has a detailed method to do just that. HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. The author who specializes in Exercise and Nutition Science and Sports Sciences will describe everything you know even if you are a beginner to plan and do your HIIT . I especially like that he gives lots of scientific explanation for this type of training. There are several examples of workout including warm-up, and cool down. There is also an example of a 8 week program overview . There are plenty of workouts tips and stratefies to use for your specific situation including the importance of goal setting, self-assessment fitness test. There is a whole section on nutrition you can use when doing HIIT.

Overall, the book is well presented and very comprehensive. If you are interested in HIIT, I highly recommend reading this book.

Great workouts! Highly effective!

This books has helped me discover a very effective workout regimen – High Intensity Interval Training. A perfect exercising course that perfectly suits my body, HIIT combines high and low intensity (the ‘interval’) bouts of exercising. The health benefits of HIIT, along with its low cost, makes the method particularly appealing to me. Another advantage is that this book covers the topic in depth, so I do not need to consult any other source for information. Great work by Steve Ryan, will recommend this to friends!

Effective results in less time

To the point book about HIIT. I really enjoy High Intensity Interval Training as I prefer to have quick workouts as I don't have 2 or 3 hours per day to work out. Great points and information throughout this book including heart rates and training / recovery zones. Recommended for those with less time but want to work out with effective results.

About the Author

Professor JAMES W NILSSON taught at Iowa State University for 39 years. Since retiring from Iowa State, he has been a visiting professor at Notre Dame, California Polytechnic at San Luis Obispo, and the United States Air Force Academy. In 1962, he co-authored (with R.G. Brown) Introduction to Linear Systems Analysis (John Wiley & Sons). In 1968, he authored Introduction to Circuits, Instruments, and Electronics (Harcourt Brae and World). Professor Nilsson received a Standard Oil Outstanding Teacher Award in 1968, the IEEE Undergraduate Teaching Award in 1992, and the McGraw-Hill Jacob Millman Award in 1995. In 1990, he was elected to the rank of Fellow in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers.

Professor SUSAN A. RIEDEL has been a member of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Marquette University since 1981. She also holds a clinical research appointment in the Department of Orthopaedics at the Medical College of Wisconsin and was a visiting professor in the Bioengineering Unit at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, Scotland, as a Fulbright Scholar during the 1989-90 academic year. She has received two awards for teaching excellence at Marquette, and was recognized for her research contributions with an award from the Chicago Unit of the Shriner's Hospitals.

Poor Choice, Price Unmatched by Quality

This book seems to me to be poorly written and put together. It does not prepare the student well enough even to accomplish the assessment problems and final chapter problems - very nebulous as to what exactly it is asking on some of those. Some of the problems and exercises will get you turning pages back and forth as they reference another problem/figure from a few pages before.

Our professor and many classmates have, in just a few chapters early in the quarter, found a myriad of errors, wrong answers in the back, and misprints - a sign of poor quality check and assurance.

I came across the 9th edition and for 3 hours compared the first 9 chapters against this 10th newest edition, page by page (seriously), and found that the text content, the examples, the assessment problems (spread throughout the chapters), a few chapter articles (the Practice Perspectives - each chapter has one), and the summaries, are exactly the same, word-for-word, number-by-number, as in "there's nothing different"! I didn't check the problems at the end of each chapter as our professor had already told us they were simply shuffled and maybe changed some of the numbers a bit.

To me, Electric Circuits 10th Edition is nothing more than a fancy and very expensive reprint of the 9th edition (check the reviews on the 9th edition for more).

A dense read worth the effort

Let me begin by saying that this book is dense. It is not easy to work through and there will be no hand holding or worked out examples. You will have to pay close attention to the actual theory and abstract ideas presented. You will also probably end up looking up for worked out examples on the web or in another book.

Having said that, this book will prepare you for what lies ahead if you are a Electrical or Computer Engineer. As an engineer at a top 10 school (ranked 4 in ECE), I used this book instead of the one my teacher prescribed. The difference it has made is astronomical. Typically, we were given homework problems and assignments from a book that watered down everything. Then, come test time, we were literally ripped apart by exam questions and abstract ideas.

Not anymore. After purchasing this book and using it as my primary reading, I was been able to better understand and apply the concepts that my teachers or book never fully explained. The problems assigned in this book are HARD and you will be required to seek out help, but the reward will be when you can confidently solve and actually understand what is going on. I highly recommend this book to anyone out there who is interested in going beyond the typical introductory material for electrical engineering.

Don't bother with the 10th edition. It's a sham and a redo of the 9th edition with problems moved here or there and a few new ones. Would not buy again if I needed to.

About the Author

Sandra Diehl is Associate Professor and Vice Head of the Department of Media and Communications at Alpen-Adria University of Klagenfurt, Austria. She received her Ph.D. and her habilitation in Business Administration from Saarland University in Germany. Her research interest include media and convergence management, international and intercultural advertising, CSR and health communication. Sandra Diehl has published in numerous journals, such as the International Journal of Advertising, Media Psychology, Advances in International Marketing, Advances in Consumer Research, the International Marketing Review, and European Advances in Consumer Research. She has authored and edited several books, among them Advances in Advertising Research and Media and Convergence Management. She has international teaching experience and instructs undergraduate and graduate students. She is also board member of the European Advertising Academy.

Matthias Karmasin is director of the Institute for Comparative Media and Communication Studies �of the Austrian Academy of Sciences and the AAU (Alpen-Adria University Klagenfurt). Furthermore, he is a full professor and chair for media and communications at the Alpen-Adria University of Klagenfurt, Austria. He is corresponding member of the philosophic-historic class of the Austrian Academy of Sciences. He is an expert for media accountability and he has published extensively on media ethics and media management, organisational communication, communication theory and media practice. Karmasin has developed the media stakeholders’ theory. Recently, he has published an empirical study about the Austrian media and their managers. His professional experiences include business consultancy as�cofounder of Medienhaus Wien �and several stations abroad (mainly in the US and Germany).

She received her Ph.D. in communications from the University of Washington. He is co-founder of the European Advertising Academy (EAA) and was president of the EAA between 2010 and 2012. His work has appeared in numerous journals, including the Journal of Advertising, International Journal of Advertising, Media Psychology, International Marketing Review, European Management Journal, Journal of Medical Internet Research, among others. Ralf Terlutter has lectured in Austria, Germany, the USA, China, Spain and Croatia. He received his Ph.D. from Saarland University, Germany. Fascinating Read

Heard about this book in the Chicago Sun Times and thought it sounded interesting. Not being particularly scientifically literate, I decided it was probably above my pay-grade. I saw the author discussing the book on TV and changed my mind. He had a way of explaining things that made intuitive sense, so I thought I'd give it try.

I'm so very glad that I did, an absolutely fascinating and highly accessible read.

Interesting topics discussed herein: declining sperm counts, benefits of breastfeeding, contraceptives, potty training, etc.

I recommend this book to anyone interested in human biology, human evolution, human reproduction, or interested in science generally. But no need for extensive scientific training, Martin has a way with words that makes complicated topics easy to follow and comprehend. For being as widely accessible as it is, his writing is not overly pedantic or condescending, just very informative and accessible. Those coming to the book with a some prior scientific training will also find plenty to enjoy as he seems to draw on a wide range of scientific research and methods from which to draw his conclusions. Best of all, he adds a bit of humor to boot.

Excellent read

I found "How we do it" a very intriguing book. As a biological anthropologist, I'm familiar with the topic of the evolution of human reproductive biology, but Robert Martin achieves a to present a superbly coherent picture of it. It is not easy to narrate science for a broad audience without being imprecise, but this book is a prime example that it is possible. And, rather than re-telling an old story, Martin presents his own ideas, supported by a variety of neglected studies and recent publications, in a very convincing way. For me, the two crucial points are that, first, male fertility is declining in many populations worldwide, and second, there is no "window" for conception in women. I think it is an important book, as these astonishing facts should be known by every teacher, to be told to every youth with the aim of replacing the common misperceptions that prevail even in well-educated people around the world.

Don't Walk - Run and Buy this Book Now...!!!

This book is by far the best accounting of the evolution of human sexuality and human reproduction I have ever read in at least the past 30+ years that I've been a biologist. In addition, this book is written in a language and style that is easily understandable by the general public, not just targeted for other fellow scientists or students in that field of endeavor (as often is the case when professional biologists write books). I became a science and nature TV documentary filmmaker over 25 years ago working for a PBS station here in Los Angeles in order to bring the often times dull and boring topic of science documentaries to the TV screen (as well as receiving my Ph.D. in Biology from Cambridge University in England), and I am constantly inundated by books and programs that presume to be targeted for the general public, but are too often couched in the scientific language and literature of science professionals that is not understandable (or entertaining) to most people. Bob Martin's book breaks new ground in being not only understandable by the general public through his witty and upbeat writing style, but ALSO I found the book to be filled with brand new and pertinent information from the scientific literature (that even I was not at first aware of), and his book is based on the most up-to-date biological research currently available. Therefore, I find that this book represents the perfect conduit from the latest scientific research into the evolution of human reproduction, and brings it down to an engaging and entertaining contribution to anyone's knowledge base, regardless of how much science or evolutionary biology they previously knew. Kudos on a job well done...!!!

About the Author
C. Henry Edwards is emeritus professor of mathematics at the University of Georgia. He earned his Ph.D. at the University of Tennessee in 1960, and recently retired after 40 years of classroom teaching (including calculus or differential equations almost every term) at the universities of Tennessee, Wisconsin, and Georgia, with a brief interlude at the Institute for Advanced Study (Princeton) as an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellow. He has received numerous teaching awards, including the University of Georgia's honoratus medal in 1983 (for sustained excellence in honors teaching), its Josiah Meigs award in 1991 (the institution's highest award for teaching), and the 1997 statewide Georgia Regents award for research university faculty teaching excellence. His scholarly career has ranged from research and dissertation direction in topology to the history of mathematics to computing and technology in the teaching and applications of mathematics. In addition to being author or co-author of calculus, advanced calculus, linear algebra, and differential equations textbooks, he is well-known to calculus instructors as author of The Historical Development of the Calculus (Springer-Verlag, 1979). During the 1990s he served as a principal investigator on three NSF-supported projects: (1) A school mathematics project including Maple for beginning algebra students, (2) A Calculus-with-Mathematica program, and (3) A MATLAB-based computer lab project for numerical analysis and differential equations students.

David E. Penney, University of Georgia, completed his Ph.D. at Tulane University in 1965 (under the direction of Prof. L. Bruce Treybig) while teaching at the University of New Orleans. Earlier he had worked in experimental biophysics at Tulane University and the Veteran's Administration Hospital in New Orleans under the direction of Robert Dixon McAfee, where Dr. McAfee's research team's primary focus was on the active transport of sodium ions by biological membranes. Penney's primary contribution here was the development of a mathematical model (using simultaneous ordinary differential equations) for the metabolic phenomena regulating such transport, with potential future applications in kidney physiology, management of hypertension, and treatment of congestive heart failure. He also designed and constructed servomechanisms for the accurate monitoring of ion transport, a phenomenon involving the measurement of potentials in microvolts at impedances of millions of megohms. Penney began teaching calculus at Tulane in 1957 and taught that course almost every term with enthusiasm and distinction until his retirement at the end of the last millennium. During his tenure at the University of Georgia he received numerous University-wide teaching awards as well as directing several doctoral dissertations and seven undergraduate research projects. He is the author of research papers in number theory and topology and is the author or co-author of textbooks on calculus, computer programming, differential equations, linear algebra, and liberal arts mathematics.

I thought the book was very straightforward and easy to understand

I rented this book for my differential equations class at the University of Utah. I thought the book was very straightforward and easy to understand. The writing is good I thought. Just go to class, work the exercises, and you'll be fine. There are parts that are a bit hard, but that's just math/physics/engineering for you. The examples had a good mixture of trivial to difficult, as did the exercises. One positive thing about the physical aspect of the book is that it's light and small--perfect if you keep it in your backpack.

I think the only thing I'd suggest is for the PDE section to go a little bit more in depth. Granted, we only covered PDEs for the final week or so, but it would've been nice to better understand that. I don't think I fully "got it."
