Does not actually contain unicorn-on-girl action - unicorn turns into a human to seduce her

On the plus side, the author cut straight to the unicorn encounter, unlike some other unicorn porn I could name. I can't honestly recall whether the writing itself was good or bad, but either way, this story gets a bad review because the unicorn turns into a human! This is supposed to be unicorn erotica, not "magical dude" erotica! To the author, I say "if you were squeamish about magical-beast-on-human action, I dunno WHAT you're doing in this neck of the woods".
This is the second time an author has pulled this bizarre stunt, and I've half a mind to write my own story* where the unicorn says "well, if you're afraid of the beast-on-girl action..." and turns her into another unicorn.

*I wanted to say "with blackjack, and hookers!" but old Futurama reference is old :P

In 1969, I was teaching at two seminaries in the Chicago area. One of my courses was on the parables by Jesus and the other was on the resurrection stories about Jesus. I had observed that the parabolic stories by Jesus seemed remarkably similar to the resurrection stories about Jesus. Were the latter intended as parables just as much as the former? Had we been reading parable, presuming history, and misunderstanding both?

So begins the quest of renowned Jesus scholar John Dominic Crossan as he unlocks the true meanings and purposes of parable in the Bible so that modern Christians can respond genuinely to Jesus's call to fully participate in the kingdom of God. In The Power of Parable, Crossan examines Jesus's parables and identifies what he calls the "challenge parable" as Jesus's chosen teaching tool for gently urging his followers to probe, question, and debate the ideological absolutes of religious faith and the presuppositions of social, political, and economic traditions.

Moving from parables by Jesus to parables about Jesus, Crossan then presents the four gospels as "megaparables." By revealing how the gospels are not reflections of the actual biography of Jesus but rather (mis)interpretations by the gospel writers themselves, Crossan reaffirms the power of parables to challenge and enable us to co-create with God a world of justice, love, and peace.

About the Author

John Dominic Crossan, professor emeritus at DePaul University, is widely regarded as the foremost historical Jesus scholar of our time. The book in question is not an easy reading unless one is equipped with critical intelligence and/or ...

When I bought the book “The Power of Parable” by J. D. Crossan, I vaguely expected an interpretative compendium on the parables in the New Testament. As my naïve expectations were thwarted, I was nevertheless reawakened in the consciousness of Mr. Crossan’s oeuvre and of his judicious direction of biblical research. The book in question is not an easy reading unless one is equipped with critical intelligence and/or a certain psychological open-mindedness to be fair to the author. What I encountered was rather a brief reading of parable texts and an extensive examination of their characteristics as to whether they should individually belong to a category of example, challenge, or attack parables. Well, in reading through the book step by step, I felt like experiencing a new ‘paradigm shift’ - in the manner after Thomas Kuhn – in the general history of biblical interpretations. One is first reminded of Erasmus and Luther, who started to look at the Bible, especially the New Testament as a text. That was the beginning of textual criticism, which later developed into biblical hermeneutics with Schleiermacher in the 19th century. In the same breath, one witnessed the advent of David Strauss with his book “The Life of Jesus (Das Leben Jesu)” for his emphasis on the historicity of Jesus, and then of Ludwig Feuerbach with his book “The Essence of Christianity (Das Wesen des Christentums)” upholding God as being nothing else but the outward projection of man’s best inner qualities. As our contemporaries, we are reminded of Rudolf Bultmann with his demythology (Entmythologisierung) as well as of Hans Küng, to whose waves of paradigm shift Mr. Crossan’s earnest, critically intelligent research, whereby no stone in the whole Bible is left unturned, should be adjoined. The book in question as a whole was a very enriching reading experience for me.

Not for the faint of heart

John Dominic Crossan is part of the Jesus Seminar group from the 80s, and he comes along with Marcus Borg and Bart Ehrmann as a deconstructionist with an interesting premise: it's not just the parables of Jesus that represent instructive fiction, it's much of the life of Jesus that can be seen that way as well. I'm an old Methodist pastor, and I don't find this book particularly objectionable -- if you have read Borg or Spong, you have looked into the maw of chaos already, and either you get vertigo or you don't -- and a lot of what Crossan says about the stories about Jesus being just as much instructional tale-telling as the stories BY Jesus rings true. This is a book to read by yourself if you want to go "off road" a little bit in your study of the Gospels, fun to read, provocative, but migod, don't take it to Sunday School and use it to teach the parables. Not the right application. Read it personally, highlight the things that make sense -- and you will find many things to highlight -- and argue with Crossan in the margins if you want to. If you want something more historical, read Reza Aslan's "Zealot,: This is theology, not history.

With a lifetime of research, scholarship, and volumes of writing devoted to responsible, informed understanding of the Jesus of history, Crossan integrates his life's passion in an accessible, highly readable text. While some background and familiarity with Crossan's highly disciplined approach helps appreciation for content and conclusions in The Power of Parable, the lay-person will grasp key concepts and implications. Full integration of this knowledge appears dependent upon one's own ability to approach Biblical scholarship with an open-mind, letting evidence inform one's understanding as opposed to tradition. The heart of the text illustrates the "Challenge of Collaboration" restoring power back into "The Kingdom of God." Understanding Jesus in real history clarifies the most important premise of Christian teaching. Instead of idly waiting on the promise of an enchanted kingdom after death, legitimate scholarship empowers the parables' true voice, compelling action. Parables paint a much different picture from the evangelical "free gift" understanding. If parables emanate from the Jesus of history, the struggle turns from attempting to believe in Santa-Claus-type mythology to taking up one's own cross faithfully living and participating in a collaborative effort fortifying the Kingdom that is "among us."

4.5 stars - action packed ending to a great series

This series got off to a slow start, but in hindsight, because book 1 in particular, and book 2 to a lesser extent, did the majority of the world building and character development, this book, and its predecessor, were able to bring this series to an almost five star conclusion. Over the course of the series, and most strongly in this book, the author credibly morphed Marko from a narcissist to an empathetic hero. Hunter went from a guy who could only see black and white to a guy who could see shades of gray. Tessa was the weakest character - weak to strong to weak to strong, buffeted about by the men who loved her to meet their own needs. The underlying plot was full of twists and turns, and felt really original (altho as caveat I don't read tons of PNR) making this a fast paced read. I could have lived without the epilogue - it would have been a courageous end without it - but I get why it ended the way it did.

What kept this from being a full five stars for me - mild spoiler - what happened with Tessa and Aetas near the end didn't feel credible because she knew better - big discussion about the role of her crown earlier in this book - so it felt like the author just needed a way to bring this to a conclusion as opposed to a character staying in character. The only other issue I had was the extreme number of homonyms and other minor editing issues - so much so I was taken right out of the story on numerous occasions trying to figure out what the real communication was. It was a great read - and a great series - I highly recommend.

Author Alaska Angelini,You made a home run!!!!!!!!!!!!HOO_HOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!F..k it loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Oh what a ride!!!!!!!!!!!!Absolutely,mind f..k!!!!!!!!This is volume 5 from the series Reign (Marko Delacroix) and saying loved it...I suggest right now to go and read the others before this one,to get to know what the story is about cause you do not want to get lost when you read this Reign....Its Pack!!!!!!!Action,the turmoil not only for humans but also for the vampire and the war they have...The plot but the twisted mind that author Alaska Angelini will put you trough... I had my ups/down with the WTF just happen!!!!!!Battle,loyalty tested,intense and so much more that Reign will take you from page one to the end with holding your breath then when you see the last word you will be able to breath....This story come with the stunning conclusion of the Marko Delacroix series!!!!!!!!!!!!!Just loved it!!!!!!!!!!!!!I sure will look forward to read more of her work/book cause she ROCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Applause!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Marko, he knew that I'm not a paranormal fan. I had no idea that this series was PNR. But once I started, I couldn't put it down! I both loved and loathed every character in this series, but Marko? I want him to be real!

Alaska did a magnificent job pulling me into this series and now I'm all types of sad that it's over. I miss them all so much.

Please be advised; if you're looking for an Edward Cullen, you wont find him in this series. There are dark elements, themes and triggers that some readers won't be able to handle.

A copy was gifted in exchange for an honest review through Twisted Sisters' Book Reviews and I HIGHLY suggest you read this series, but make sure you start on a long weekend, you wont be able to put it down.

Klugarsh Mind Control for all of us!

I was reminded of this most excellent book yesterday when I heard an interview with the author of *Mind Wide Open* on the radio. He apparently tested a bunch of "brain machines" to write about in his book, and one of them was a video game sort of thing, in which the player must learn to enter the alpha brain state at will in order to succeed at the game.
Of course genius Daniel Pinkwater had this idea years ago!! I kept thinking, "You just have to fall back laughing, saying 'I give up,' of course!" Readers of *Alan Mendelsohn* will have an early advantage if this game hits the big time.
As is the case for many other reviewers, this book was one of the most important of my adolescence, one of the few that I read and re-read. My brother and I would repeatedly crack up reminding each other of a certain unorthodox loudspeaker incident in it.
What I most admire about this book when I think back about it now is that it keeps moving forward into surprising territory---it has a satisfying revenge fantasy plot, a self-actualization plot, an adventure/alternate reality plot, and a refreshing sense of "larger mystery" throughout. As a young adult, it helps to be reminded that there are uncharted realms outside of school's hideousness!

The best novel by one of my favorite authors.

Daniel Pinkwater is one of my 5-10 favorite authors. Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars is his best book. The Big Orange Splot (a picture book) is a very close second.
Fortunately for those of you who have loved this book since childhood, it has now been reprinted as part of the Pinkwater collection 5 Novels, which I bought approximately 5 minutes after I found it in our local bookstore. I'm reading it to my husband now (to introduce him to Pinkwater) and it is at least as good as I remembered (from the last time I read it, two or three years ago). Pinkwater's books are good read aloud although I have to stop and laugh fairly often.
Context in literature:
Alison Lurie's _Don't Tell the Grownups: Subversive Children's Literature_ divides children's stories into two classes. The large majority attempt to teach children how to belong to, or conform to, society. As Lurie says in her foreword: "They were about children or bunny rabbits or little engines who had problems or faults and got into difficult situations, sometimes comic and sometimes serious. But in the end they were always helped by some wise, helpful older person or rabbit or engine. The protagonists of these books, that is, learned to depend on authority for help and advice. They also learned to be hardworking, responsible, and practical; to stay on the track and be content with their lot in life."
Almost all Berenstein Bears books are good examples of this. There is always a moral and if there isn't a book called The Berenstein Bears Learn their Manners there probably will be.
The other, smaller class, Lurie characterizes as subversive; expressing views not commonly spoken in the adult world at the time of writing. This includes most of the books and authors I loved growing up: Alice's Adventures in Wonderland & Through the Looking Glass, E. Nesbitt, Winnie the Pooh, Mary Poppins, George McDonald and Dr. Seuss (examples Lurie gives), and Edward Eager, Sylvia Louise Engdahl, Diane Duane, Diana Wynne Jones, Madeline L! 'Engle, Jane Langton, McCaffrey's Harper Hall trilogy, and so on. And Daniel Manus Pinkwater. His main, subversive message throughout his works is: Be Yourself. It's a lot more fun than trying to conform.
Plot synopsis:
I will keep this vague. On this go-around, I was surprised to find that things don't get very weird until about 100 pages in.
Leonard Neeble (the narrator) is a misfit at Bat Masterson Junior High School (Pinkwater always names his schools after villians ... the Snarkout Boys go to Genghis Khan). Almost all the other kids are Beautiful Dimwits and obviously from well-to-do families to judge by their impeccable dress.
His family just moved from an urban neighborhood to the suburbs. Leonard, lonely and bored, finds the best way to avoid negative attention is to be invisible. Unfortunately, his first report card shows he's doing poorly in all classes (he takes the textbooks home and reads them in a night or two each).
Things look up when Alan Mendelsohn transfers in. The two smart misfits soon became the best of friends. Things are set in motion when Alan starts a riot and is suspended for a week.
On Monday, Leonard misses Alan at school and that night at his weekly appointment with his child psychologist Leonard applies his recent study of psychology and manipulates his shrink into making him take the rest of the week off of school. This gives the two boys plenty of time to explore Hogboro.
As I said, things don't start to get truly strange until about a hundred pages in. But the pacing is perfect. Every chapter is funny, and you are gradually set up for the climax, which has almost nothing to do with the Hogboro suburb and Bat Masterson Junior High where the story began.
Summary: Alan Mendelsohn, the Boy from Mars, is a masterpiece of comedy. I especially recommend it to anyone who feels that they don't fit in. Also, if you enjoy this book or any of the ones I listed in the literature section above, try out some of the other subversive authors. Their work is better than mos! t adult novels.

The world needs more subversive children's authors...

I am a Pinkwater fan from way back. So when I was bored, without any reading material at hand, I picked up this gem and read it. Pinkwater was still as great as I remembered, and I wish that I'd had this book in particular when I was in junior high. You see, I only now realize that I attended Bat Mastersom Jr High. Sure, it wasn't called that, but everything matched. Even from my current place in life, as a college sophmore, my junior high school experience is still a difficult question for me, and this book has helped me to put it into perspective. A must for any young person who is struggling with a world that won't accept them for their own strengths. We need more authors for catering to the intellegent youth, offering the message that even though your life seems so much harder than those who choose to remain ignorant, you can hold your head high, and you will be happier in the long run. Pinkwater deserves a spot next to Roald Dahl, Madeline L'Engel, Dr. Seuss, and the other greats of children's literature.

Very interesting and well-structured

The book “Public Health- Power, Empowerment and Professional Practice” by Glenn Laverack is useful for both health professionals and ‘beginners’ in Public Health. I am a beginner in the concept of Public Health and I have found it very useful to read. The chapters start with an introduction, which gives the necessary theory. The theory in combination with the practical examples throughout the chapters is very valuable for a complete understanding of the subjects.

One of the new chapters “Helping migrant populations to become empowered” is especially interesting, considering the perceived problems with migrants and refugees at the moment.

Always A Clasic Text Book

I read it( first edition) as a first year under-graduate student in the Presidency College, University of Calcutta,India, many years ago.
It was fantastic, to go through it, using mathematical approach, which makes everything so easy to understand.
It has helped me to read easily the Paul Samuelson's Foundations of Economic Analysis, which is a classic on its own.
Now, in its latest edition, it is still a classic, which I use for my undergraduate and sometime post graduate students in Japan. They love it.
If you read it as text, you can sail through any journals of economics without much difficulties.
If there is a Nobel prize for text books, Henderson & Quandt should get it.

Great Book

The Henderson and Quandt book covers the basics of micro theory very well. The topics are presented in a very organized manner, which makes the book excellent for MA students. If you are looking for a good beginning instructional book as a companion for your coursework at the MA level, Henderson & Quandt is it!

From a teen-age survivor

I am not quite finished with the book, but so far, I think it is very well written. It covers a topic that is difficult to talk about and is often avoided. It has been challenging for me to get through; however, I feel like I should add my perspective. I was diagnosed with cancer at 10. I am now 15 years old and a teen-age cancer survivor. I am a volunteer and advocate for pediatric cancer awareness.

This book has gotten negative reviews based on several points:
1) This is from another reviewer: "The characters are not believable. They do not speak like teenagers. They do not even handle situations like teenagers do. So many interactions between Gus and Hazel are interactions which, plain and simple, just would not happen between real, emotional, scared, awkward, virgin teenagers, let alone ones with cancer who have been socially cut off for much of their lives."

*My point-of-view: Have you spent time with any of us? They are believable as teen-age cancer patients/survivors. We may look like teen-agers, but in our heads, we are not. We have had to face our own mortality and make choices we should never have to make. It makes us grow up...quickly. Most of us do not act or speak like teen-agers because that is no longer how we think. After treatment, many of us find the things most teens (and sometimes adults) are worried about are trivial. Society cuts us off, but we are not cut off from each other. These types of interactions do happen. And, it is emotional and scary, but we learn to tell it like it is, without the normal fluff and awkwardness. We find 'normal' where we can and try to live every single day we have because we know that time is an illusion.

2) The parents are not real, not deep characters, and they do not have their own identities.

*My point-of-view: I have seen my own parents (and siblings) and the parents of other friends struggle with this. Many times, they do not have their own identities anymore. Every single minute is spent trying to make it to the next! They try to keep the family together and functioning, in spite of the effects of treatment, fevers and midnight trips to the emergency room, 3 weeks of the month spent in isolation, jobs in jeopardy, birthdays and holidays interrupted, not to mention talks that parents never want to have with their child. I've talked to my mom about this. This becomes their identity. My mom said their jobs become about doing whatever it takes, travelling all over the country (which is very common), researching new studies, and new medicines, all to help us survive and thrive with grace and dignity. It is also their job to prepare, if treatments don't work, to help us die with just as much grace and dignity.

I hope everyone can read this with an open mind and an open heart. Then, reach out to the patients and survivors in your communities. They are wise beyond their years, funny, brave and inspiring.

but this book absolutely fantastic. It reaches deep inside of me

I'm not usually one for young adult fiction, but this book absolutely fantastic. It reaches deep inside of me. It’s a story of a quiet tragedy, love, and an undeniable reality. Hazel and Augustus face mortality and so many of the meaningless details of life. It forces them to face who they really truly are. How would they carry on... Terminal disease gives you fear, for yourself, for your loved ones. It causes pain that you are the reason to make your family feel worried and cry at night. Green wrote this sad, tragic, yet beautiful story, it brings tears to my eyes.

The Best Book I've Read in Years

I've read a lot of books, but this is one of my all time favorites; that's not something I can say about very many books. I'll make it simple; I'm a fifteen year old teenage boy. When I usually read a book, I toss it aside and move on to the next one. And, like most teenage boys, I am not very emotional. At the end of this book, I cried. Not just a few tears either; I was full on bawling my eyes out. That's how good this book is. I promise you, unless you have a heart of stone, you will love this book.
