This monumental study combines history, geography, mythology, archaeology and anthropology with biblical text analysis. Segal, a professor of Jewish studies at Barnard College, spent 10 years on this project, but the erudition he displays is undoubtedly the result of a lifetime of scholarship. In every culture, people ask the same fundamental questions about their existence, including "what happens after we die?" Although Segal maintains that answers to that question lie "beyond confirmation or disconfirmation in the scientific sense," he offers a comprehensive overview of how the afterlife is understood in the three main Western religions. A Weighty Tome

Alan F. Segal's book "Life After Death" is my first read of his work, and certainly the most massive book I have read in some time. Considering the sheer scope of the topic Segal has attempted to cover, the size of the book should come as no surprise. However, the physical weight is where the "weightiness" ends.

Now, before you freak out about over 700 pages of text on life after death, it should be emphasised that Segal writes in a very accessible and easy going manner. A few of the words he uses require a dictionary, (at least, I needed one), but the incidence of this was not a burden. Segal keeps you moving and presents a great level of quotation from ancient sources to highlight his points. His manner and style of presentation and discussion are absolutely fantastic.

Segal presents the beliefs of different cultures from a more social viewpoint than anything, and deals with how these beliefs can illustrate what the people thought of about themselves and the world about them. What you end up with is a very interesting discussion not just on life after death, but also some of the political, cultural and social concerns that went into them. This makes for a very well-rounded discussion.

Segal takes you through various cultures and civilisations, and throughout he inter-connects various ideas between them to show how they illustrate each other by contrast or simularity. These cultures include chapters on Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia and Canaan, Israelite, (broken into various chapters), and much more, including detailed chapters on Christian views and their development through the centuries.

This book is really a great overview of the topic, and it is relatively easy to find from Segal's referencing further material for more specific reading. Segal has done exceptionally well to squeeze such a vast topic into about 750 well-written and dynamic pages.

This book gets a big "thumbs-up" from me. I will certainly be reading more of Segal's work in the future.

For many Christians, recitation of the Apostles' Creed is a rote part of Sunday morning's liturgy. And most worshipers more than likely routinely repeat phrases they've repeated Sunday after Sunday without giving much or any thought to what they're saying. "Resurrection of the dead" I suspect is one of those affirmations that roll politely off the tongue while conveniently by-passing the gray matter. My hunch is that people assume they're making a belief statement about the resurrection of Jesus not their own physical, corporeal resurrection.

Segal's book picks up where Oscar Cullman left off and goes into exhaustive and fascinating detail as to how the idea of an afterlife came to be in the Western world. Cullman's little book (Immortality of the Soul or Resurrection of the Dead) is must reading. In less than a hundred pages, Cullman details the differences between the pagan notion of an immortal soul and the Jewish/Christian belief in the resurrection of the dead--real bodies being raised in the last days. Life After Death begins with those same pagans and then offers an extremely well-documented history of various religion's views of the afterlife. This is not an afternoon read.

What I found most fascinating about Segal's book was the way he demonstrated the connection between the different philosophical ideas and the religious belief system(s) that inherited or appropriated its predecessor. One must make a leap of faith at times with his connections (no proof can be made that an early Christian said, "Plato's Phaedra makes sense to me!"), but the bridges he makes are convincing and cited with care. Gnosticism is but one compelling example of such a connection.

Apart from the historical aspect, one may ask, "So what? What difference does it make?" American Christians' bias against Muslims viz. martyrdom is one case in point. It is assumed (by our prejudice) that martyrs do what they do to inherit afterlife in Paradise. And that very well may be the case, and Segal does a fine job of looking at the nuances of Islamic interpretation of holy text. But recall Marx blasted Christianity as the opiate of the masses and Woody Guthrie criticized Christians for desiring the "pie in the sky by and by" because these beliefs can lead to self-righteousness, ignoring of social issues, and the Christian version of holy war (Crusades, Manifest destiny, Iraq).

Expect to be enlightened and amazed with this book. I cannot recommend it strongly enough for any thoughtful Christian, one who adheres to the dictum that spiritual growth is "faith seeking understanding."

Exhaustive Coverage of Jewish, Christian, Islamic Views

Humans are, so far as we know, the only animal that concerns itself with what happens to us after we die. We don't even like to use the word die, we say passed away, crossed the river Jordan, or other terms. ==A major aspect of western religion is defining life after death. And in this monumental work, the origin and evolution of afterlife thoughts are traced. He begins with the Egyptions, where a life after death theology began to be developed. He thoroughly examines other early cultures such as Mesopotamia, Canaan, Greece, etc.

Finally he gets into the big three of western religions, first he covers Jewish views (Dr. Segal is a professor of Jewish studies at Columbia). Christian views come largely from Paul (Dr. Segal wrote a definitive book on Paul.) and the Gospels. For Islam, of course the Qur'an and some of the more modern writings are used.

In spite of the books large size (about 730 pages of text plus 150 pages of notes) it is fascinating enough and well written enough that it is relatively easy reading.

The Best Resource on Barns

I highly recommend this book for general readers and researchers interested in relationships between architecture and history. John Vlach has a comprehensive knowledge of architecture, and he insightfully writes about the importance of barns and rural cultural landscapes as resources for studying history. This new volume is an important resource for studies of rural folk culture as it provides studies of a great variety of barns and an array of approaches for learning about vernacular architecture.

Barn Research

I am an architect and I bought this book to research barn types for a barn I am renovating. The CD with it was a pleasant bonus, however, I wish the pictures were higher resolution. It is very difficult to ferret out the actual built details on some of these barns--the pictures in the book are small, and the CD wasn't as helpful as I hoped.. The history of barn types was very helpful, and nice to see the HABS/HAER program drawings included. It is a fairly comprehensive survey. I wish more barn types had been included in the Northeast section, and of course more structural detailing drawings or photos would have been nice throughout--not just elevations and floor plans. Structural systems for heavy timber framing and distributing lateral loads vary a lot throughout the country, and by barn type, and often inform how the barn is used--there are better books for that.

I especially liked the built farm equipment section (hay cranes), even though that wasn't why I bought it, because I'd never seen pictures of it before. And old hay stack methods before the balers were invented were also interesting. The history of the transverse crib barn was very useful.

About the Author
Samuel E. Wood received his doctorate from the University of Florida. He taught at West Virginia University and the University of Missouri–St. Louis and was a member of the doctoral faculty at both universities. From 1984 to 1996, he served as president of the Higher Education Center, a consortium of 14 colleges and universities in the St. Louis area. He�was a cofounder of the Higher Education Cable TV channel (HEC-TV) in St. Louis and served as its president and CEO from its founding in 1987 until 1996. Dr. Wood passed away in 2008.

Ellen Green Wood received her doctorate in educational psychology from St. Louis University and was an adjunct professor of psychology at St. Louis Community College at Meramec. She has also taught in the clinical experiences program in education at Washington University and at the University of Missouri—St. Louis. In addition to her teaching, Dr. Wood has developed and taught seminars on critical thinking. She received the Telecourse Pioneer Award from 1982 through 1988 for her contributions to the field of distance learning.

Denise Boyd received her Ed.D. in educational psychology from the University of Houston and has been a psychology instructor in the Houston Community College system since 1988. From 1995 until 1998, she chaired the psychology, sociology, and anthropology department at Houston Community College–Central. She has coauthored three other Allyn and Bacon texts: with Helen Bee, Lifespan Development (Fourth Edition) and The Developing Child (Eleventh Edition); and with Genevieve Stevens, Current Readings in Lifespan Development. A licensed psychologist, she has presented a number of papers at professional meetings, reporting research in child, adolescent, and adult development. She has also presented workshops for teachers whose students range from preschool to college.

I read the entire book cover-to-cover

I enjoyed the book. I used it to pass the CLEP exam. The topics in this book were organized almost exactly how the College Board organized the CLEP exam.

With no prior knowledge, and only this textbook, which I read cover-to-cover in about two weeks.. I scored a 72 out of 80 on the CLEP exam and earned credit for introductory psychology.

About the Author
Michele R. Davidson, PhD, CNM, CFN, RN, is Associate Professor of Nursing and affiliate faculty member, Women's Studies Program, George Mason University. Her 21 years of experience include labor and delivery, postpartum, NICU, reproductive endocrinology, and inpatient gynecology at Columbia Hospital for Women. She has delivered over 1,000 babies during her career as a nurse midwife and formulated a postpartum depression support group, which provides ongoing treatment to indigent women. Her doctoral dissertation, "Care of High-Risk Women Cared for by Certified Nurse Midwives", brought attention to the potential care that midwives could provide to a high-risk obstetrical population. Dr. Davidson has published over 50 papers, authored more than 17 textbook chapters, and published an additional 15 textbooks that she has co-written, including the international bestseller "Old's Maternal-Newborn Nursing and Women's Health Care Across the Lifespan" (9th ed.), translated into nine languages. She was Past Vice President of the Washington, D.C. chapter of the American College of Nurse Midwives and was an item writer for the ACNM National Certification Examination. She received an honorary award from the March of Dimes for her ongoing care to pregnant women.

Michele Davidson [COPY TO COME for Michele Davidson] Marcia L. London Marcia L. London has been able to combine her two greatest passions by being both a nurse caring for children and families and a teacher for almost 35 years. She received her B.S.N. and school nurse certificate from Plattsburgh State University in Plattsburgh, New York. After graduation, she began her nursing career as a pediatric nurse at St. Luke's Hospital in New York City then moved to Pittsburgh, where she began her teaching career. Mrs. London accepted a faculty position at Pittsburgh's Children's Hospital Affiliate Program and received her M.S.N. in pediatrics as a clinical nurse specialist from the University of Pittsburgh. Mrs. London began teaching at Beth-El School of Nursing and Health Science in 1974 after opening the first intensive care nursery at Memorial Hospital of Colorado Springs. She has served in many administrative and faculty positions at Beth-El, including coordinator for nursing care of children for 32 years. Mrs. London maintains her clinical skills working in an urgent care and after-hours clinic and doing undergraduate pediatric clinical supervision. She obtained her postmaster's neonatal nurse practitioner certificate in 1983 and subsequently developed the neonatal nurse practitioner (NNP) program and the master's NNP program at Beth-El. She is active nationally in neonatal nursing and was involved in the development of the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Educational Program Guidelines. She has contributed 5 chapters to various neonatal nursing texts. Mrs. London is active in nurse practitioner education in general. She was involved in the revision of the Core Competency for NursePractitioners and Curriculum Guidelines for Nurse Practitioner Education, as a member of the Education Committee of the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties and participated as part of the Core Competency Validation Expert Panel. Mrs. London has also pursued her interest in college student learning by taking doctoral classes in higher education administration and adult learning at the University of Denver in Colorado. She feels fortunate to be involved in the education of her future colleagues. Her teaching philosophy is that, with support, students can achieve more than they may initially believe they are capable of achieving. Mrs. London and her husband have two sons and one dog (Reilly, daughter by proxy). Her two sons, Craig and Matthew, are involved in computer informatics, and media arts and animation and are more than willing to give Mom helpful hints. Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig Patricia A. Wieland Ladewig received her B.S. from the College of Saint Teresa in Winona, Minnesota. After graduation, she worked as a pediatric nurse before joining the U.S. Air Force. After completing her tour of duty, Dr. Ladewig relocated at Florida, where she accepted a faculty position at Florida State University. There she embraced teaching as her calling. Over the years, she taught at several schools of nursing while earning her M.S.N. in maternal-newborn nursing from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and her Ph.D. in higher education administration from the University of Denver in Colorado. In addition, she became a women's health nurse practitioner and maintained a part-time clinical practice. In 1988 Dr. Ladewig became the first director of the nursingprogram at Regis College in Denver and., in 1991, when the college became Regis University, she became dean of the Rueckert-Hartman School for Health Professions. Under her guidance, the Department of Nursing has added a graduate program and the School has added three departments: the Department of Physical Therapy, the Department of Health Services Administration and Management, and the Department of Health Care Ethics. Dr. Ladewig feels that teaching others to be excellent, caring nurses gives her the best of all worlds because it keeps her in touch with the profession she loves and enables her to help shape the future of the nursing profession. When not at work or writing textbooks, Pat and her husband, Tim, enjoy skiing, baseball games, and traveling. However their greatest pleasure comes from their family: son Ryan, his wife, Amanda, and grandson Reed; and son, Erik, his wife Kedri, and granddaughter Emma.

Very nice and easy to read text, BUT with the Kindle version you don't have page numbers and there is no search capability so when your assigned certain pages to read or tables to review, you have to already know the chapter then scroll through to find what you're looking for.

I'm a nursing student and this is the required reading. It's a pretty straight forward text with good info.
If you are looking for the mecca of all resources, there isn't one, but this is a good start. If you have an active interest in OB/GYN, this text will give you a solid platform.

This book was required for one of my nursing classes. So far, it seems to be pretty comprehensive and easy to read. Some of the material is repeated, but repetition also helps with retention; therefore, this may be a positive or negative depending on your personal preferences.

Great-grandson of James, Paul Fenimore Cooper tells the story of an orphaned boy's fantastical journey in Tal, His Marvelous Adventures with Noom-Zor-Noom. A foreword by Paul Cooper's nephew notes that Paul Cooper was a contemporary of A.A. Milne, Hugh Lofting and L. Frank Baum and that Tal, published in 1929, enjoyed modest success. Gorgeous b&w woodcuts by Ruth Reeves illustrate the text.

About the Author
Paul Fenimore Cooper, a great-grandson of the novelist James Fenimore Cooper, was born in 1899 and graduated from Yale in 1921. He wrote TAL in 1929 and his other books include Tricks of Women and Other Albanian Tales (1928), a translation of folk tales; Island of the Lost (1961), a non-fiction account of the Arctic expedition of Sir John Franklin; and Dindle (1964), another book for children, about a dwarf who saves a kingdom from a dragon.

He lived in Cooperstown, New York, with his wife Marion Erskine Cooper and their son Paul, Jr., a physicist and Arctic explorer. The author died in 1970.

Favorite Book from My Childhood

Paul Fenimore Cooper thoroughly understands the way children think in a way that is rare even among accomplished children's authors. Only the second printing of this once rare classic, I recommend picking up a copy before the price shoots up any higher. Made to be read aloud, this coming-of-age story is sure to forge a bond between you and your 7 to 10 year old while the woodcut pictures will intrigue them. Cooper's fantastical magical imagery and dreamlike mini-stories forever influenced my young imagination. Some reviewers have said that the plot of the story is predictable; but, as Tal and Noom Zor Noom will tell you, it's about the journey more than the destination. Each chapter stands alone with stories inside the story. In fact, reading more than a chapter in one night actually gets a little overwhelming for little tikes. I should add that when my third grade librarian read this book to my class, none of us saw the ending coming. Perhaps you must be a child to really feel the full effect of the book. In any case, if I had to pick one children's book to own for my kids, this one would be it. Something about it not only encourages reading, it encourages storytelling. After reading Tal, you may find that your child wants to weave their own magical stories, too.

Far-fetched fiction at its best. A magical journey through a strange universe. Perfect for those who do not have established notions about the world or who are willing to put them aside. Noom-Zor-Noom and Millitinkle are reminiscent of Balaam and his talking quadruped. A delightful book of stories nested within stories, nested within stories, nested within stories... Completely new material. It's highly unlikely that one will run into any other storybook quite like this one.

This is the most wonderful book! My son's first grade teacher has been reading the story of Tal and the children are enthralled. I purchased the book because I know he will want to read this himself when he gets a bit older.
