About the Author
Bernard Kress has been involved in the field of digital optics since the late 1980s. He is an associate professor at the University of Strasbourg, France, teaching digital optics. For the last 15 years Dr Kress has been developing technologies and products related to digital optics. He has been working with established industries around the world and with start-ups in the Silicon Valley, California, with applications ranging from optical data storage, optical telecom, military and homeland security applications, LED and laser displays, industrial and medical sensors, biotechnology systems, optical security devices, high power laser material processing, to consumer electronics. He is on the advisory boards of various photonics companies in the US and has also been advising venture capital firms in the Silicon Valley for due diligence reviews in photonics, especially in micro- and nano-optics.
He holds more than 25 patents based on digital optics technology and applications, and is the author of more than 100 papers on this subject. He has taught several short courses given at SPIE conferences. His first book on digital optics, Digital Diffractive Optics (2000), was published by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd and has been translated into Japanese in 2005 (published by Wiley-Maruzen). He is also the author of a chapter in the best seller Optical System Design (2007), edited by R. Fisher and published by McGraw-Hill. Patrick Meyrueis is full professor at the University of Strasbourg since 1986 (formerly Louis Pasteur University). He is the founder of the Photonics Systems Laboratory which is now one of the most advanced labs in the field of planar digital optics. He is the author of more than 200 publications and was the chairman of more than 20 international conferences in photonics. He was the representative of the Rhenaphotonics cluster and one of the founders of the CNOP in 2001 (national French committee of optics and photonics). He is now acting as the scientific director of the Photonics Systems Lab and the head of the PhD and undergraduate program in the ENSPS National School of Physics in Strasbourg.

About the Author

Hayden White is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, professor emeritus of comparative literature at Stanford University, and professor emeritus of the history of consciousness at the University of California, Santa Cruz. He is the author of a number of books published by Johns Hopkins, including Tropics of Discourse: Essays in Cultural Criticism, The Content of the Form: Narrative Discourse and Historical Representation, and Figural Realism: Studies in the Mimesis Effect.

Flawed but worthwhile

Overall, a worthwhile primer on BPM but this book also has some serious flaws. When you see a title such as “Ultimate Guide”, you would think no other materials would be necessary – this isn't true with this work. Here’s my overall review in PIN (Positive/Interesting/Needs Improvement) form:

Positive:
• It’s not about the technology. A realistic perspective on the challenges of implementing BPM from an organizational perspective.
• Provides organizational change recommendations for supporting a BPM initiative.
• The “pitfalls to avoid” is worth reading through several times.

Interesting:
• The book does not delve into the evolution of specific frameworks and practices. For example, readers of Michael Porter’s “Competitive Advantage” will immediately recognize it as the source for the organizational value chain (Figure 12). Those with a software engineering background will recognize CMMI as the basis for BPMM. Neither Porter nor SEI are cited in this work; perhaps this isn't necessary because intermediate derivations of the originals are cited, but I found this interesting.

Needs Improvement:
• This book would be better if more example artifacts were presented. It references a website associated with the book, where I had hoped to find such examples, perhaps an errata, and links to some of the source material mentioned in the book. It’s not there - the website is basically advertisement for the book, which is pointless since I have already purchased the book.
• The book has a “self-published” feel to it; it would benefit from proofreaders and editors. For example, page 41 lists 4 key roles within a BPM Center of Excellence, and goes on to describe two of those roles. It doesn't describe the other two, and it feels as though the author intended to describe them but forgot those paragraphs. There are other areas where it seems as though the author was writing, got distracted, and then came back later to continue working. Hopefully a second edition will pass through a “read aloud” check before publication.

Exactly what I wanted with lots of detail

I just finished reading the Ultimate Guide to Business Process Management. It's a no nonsense, straightforward book and I would agree with others that it's well written and full of detail.
Setting up BPM capability can be difficult and I liked this book because it literally gives you the entire blueprint on how to implement BPM from scratch - and it assumes you have no prior knowledge either. It also provides a short history of BPM and comes with a dictionary and practice exam at the back. One thing the author talks about is the use of BPM in larger organizations like Toyota and General Electric. Everyone associates these organizations with TPS and Six Sigma, respectively. However, the author points out that both these organizations were successful because they had a solid BPM foundation in the first place. I also agree with this argument, including his view that BPM should be a business-led initiative, not an IT one.
If you're a beginner, this book will help you understand BPM *fast*. If you're an expert, this book makes an excellent reference guide to keep handy when running BPM projects. Definitely a good investment in my opinion.

Brief, concise, clear for both novices and experienced.

I recommend you read "The Ultimate Guide to BPM..." if you are taking a overview of foundations concepts of this practice as governance, maturity, career development model etc. It also aims to clear misunderstand concepts as: diagrams/models; process reengineering; center of excellence; business architecture, systems architecture, and so on... I read it in two days as it is not large but as a consultant in business process architecture I found value with this synthetized, clear and precise approach.. I will use it as a reference must-read book for the members of the process consultancy staff..

Wow!

If you'd like to try your hand at drawing but don't know how or where to start, this book is for you!

Funky Things to Draw will get you started drawing pets, princesses, fairies, teenagers, fashion models, ocean creatures, horses, etc.

What a BARGAIN! I really can't imagine any kid (or playful adult) who would not absolutely adore having this wonderful book. There's hours of fun here!

I have always been pretty lousy at drawing, but using this book, I look like I know what I'm doing. I've created all kinds of amazing drawings and art, using this book. Impressed my friends and family... It's super easy to follow. Good for children and beginners. It's just such a great book! What more can I say? BUY IT!

Very imaginative and well thought out

This book was given to my 9-year-old daughter as a gift. She REALLY enjoys it. It's clever, well-organized, and really teaches a child to learn the more technical aspects of drawing. The drawings themselves are great. I think it's nice for a child to approach art in a free-form manner but to help her get to "the next level", the structure demonstrated by a book like this can be very helpful.

I say "her" because the drawings she'll be working on, with some exceptions, will be mostly of interest primarily to girls. This is not a criticism at all but is meant for information only. For my daughter, it was perfect. If it's for a boy, this book may be a bit disappointing. For many, a book utilizing the same techniques directed towards more "masculine" themes would likely be welcome.

By the way, in looking at the less favorable reviews posted here, I noticed that they were more directed to the treatment of the book during shipping (or care by the previous owner in a used version) than of its content. I think this was an unfair disservice to the authors/illustrators of this fine book.
