About the Author

David Herron

David Herron has worked as a software engineer in Silicon Valley for over 20 years. This includes companies both tiny and large. He has worked on a wide variety of projects, from an X.400 e-mail server and client application to assisting with the launch of the OpenJDK project (open source Java rocks), to Yahoo's Node.js application-hosting platform (Mojito and Manhattan), and applications to monitor solar power array performance. While a staff engineer at Sun Microsystems, David worked as the architect of the Java SE Quality Engineering team where he focused on test automation tools, including co-developing the AWT Robot class. He was involved in open source activities related to Java, including the OpenJDK project. Before Sun, he worked for VXtreme on software which eventually became Windows Media Player when Microsoft bought the company. At Mainsoft, David worked on a library that allowed developers to recompile Windows applications on Unix, and then participated in porting Internet Explorer to Unix. At The Wollongong Group, he worked on both e-mail client and server software and was part of several IETF working groups improving e-mail-related protocols. David is interested in electric vehicles, world energy supplies, climate change, and environmental issues, and he is a co-founder of Transition Silicon Valley. As an online journalist, he writes about electric cars and other green technology on LongTailPipe.com after having written for PlugInCars.com. Great book for both new and old NodeJS developers!

This book is a great step by step guide to get started with NodeJS in no time. It uses a lot of detailed examples to make you understand how NodeJS works and how it can be used to implement modern requirements like using third party authentication (e. g. login with Twitter), NoSQL databases (MongoDB is used here), responsive web design, or deploying with Docker.

I found it very useful that it provides detailed information on how to install NodeJS on Windows, OS X, Linux, etc. and that it contains facts about performance (regarding usability and scalability), which are useful when thinking about picking NodeJS for the next project. Also, the book presents an interesting link between NodeJS and green technology.

The book focuses on presenting NodeJS by building an actual application to which new features are added in every chapter. This application passes through many stages, starting from a simple basic web application which displays notes in the browser and ending up having a structure similar to a social networking application (a very simple one, but conclusive for its purpose).

The content is very up to date. Apart from presenting integration with Docker and MongoDB, and how to make your web application mobile friendly, it also uses in the examples the latest changes in JavaScript (ES-2015, ES-2016) which are now available in NodeJS.

Furthermore, the language used in this book makes it pleasant to read. The more complicated parts are often rephrased to emphasize the main idea and to make it as clear as possible before passing on to the next step. Humorous comments used occasionally make this book even more fun to read.

To sum up, I think this book is a good choice and I would recommend it to all new NodeJS developers as well as to those interested in implementing more modern requirements (having responsive web design, using Docker or logging in with third party authentication). Overall, it is a great book for every developer interested in staying up to date with technology.

Node.js from scratch

Great book with amazing attention to detail and exciting projects

Too often code books fall into the classic "copy this, get that" format for teaching code which is useful for short term projects but rarely useful for actual learning. With clear, concise examples that are legitimately interesting as well as step by step instructions for implementation on a wide variety of operating systems this book strikes the perfect balance between showing and telling which allows the reader to understand Node.

What I was really impressed with is the emphasis on testing and debugging. For me, learning how to debug and test/build the environment is half the battle of learning a new language. This book has a very in-depth tutorial to setting up an environment and using the debugging and testing tools available. This helps remove a lot of the mystery that comes with new languages, and builds a better foundation for the reader.

The book is also very well written and can explain really complex topics in a way that makes it easier to understand and uses code examples and exercises to supplement the text that is already there.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to any developers looking to dive into Node as well as any developers looking to brush up on the newest and latest changes to JavaScript.

Not deep enough

From a generalists perspective this is not deep enough on Microservices or IoT - but quite likely very good if you want to build something running on Azure.

Chapter 1: From Monolithic to Microservice - more or less states that you have to be able to do what is expected of an agile team deploying microservices, that is really lacking depth.
Chapter 2: What is a Microservice - seems to have a common understanding of the definition, less on the "How to make (a good) one"
Chapter 3: Microservice Architecture - again this seems to land in the common understanding. Focus on Separation of Concerns
Chapter 4: Azure, a Microservice Platform - nice introduction on Azure I think

Stopping the Source of the Bureaucratic Stall

Many people in an organization focus on managing the boss rather than doing their own job. What better way to manage the boss than to constantly seek her/his guidance on everything? Then, the boss can be flattered that you want his/her help, and will also take the blame if anything goes wrong. Insecure bosses like to be involved, so that fewer "errors" occur.
This wonderful book points out that no one can learn without making errors. Also, if you and your subordinate are doing the same job, one of you is superfluous. A common source of stalled thinking in this area is focusing on the fact that you, as manager, can do the job better and faster than you can teach the task or job to someone. What managers fail to realize is that someone closer to the source of the problem should be able to come up with a better solution. Also, the time taken to teach someone else to do the task is usually much less over a year or two than the time taken to help someone learn the task.
The key problem is that we all like to fall back on doing what we are comfortable with and are good at rather than new challenges where we are not so competent. Banish that feeling!
This book gives you lots of practical ideas for how to respond to efforts by your subordinates and colleagues to delegate their work and responsibility to you. You will learn how to see them coming and to keep the monkey where it belongs: with them.

A new way to work less and be more efficient

The one minute manager's symbol, a one-minute readout from the face of a modern digital watch, is intended to remind each of us to take a minute out of our day to look into the faces of the people we manage. The monkey manger's symbol a stressed manager overwhelmed by a desk full of problems, is intended to remind us to constantly discipline ourselves to invest our time on the most vital aspects of management rather than dilute our effectiveness by "doing more efficiently those things that shouldn't be done in the first place." What follows, is a story of a manger who worked long hours and never seemed to get caught up with all the work he had to do. He learned about monkey management and how not to take initiative away from his people so they can care for and feed their own monkeys. In the process, he learned to be more effective in dealing with his own manager and the demands of his organization. The performance of his department drastically improved, as did the prospects for his career. The authors hope is that you will use what you learn in this book to make a difference in your life and the lives of the people you interact with at work and at home.

I often reference the managing your monkey's book so happy to have it. Great read! Practical, Insightful, and Worth Each of the Six-Hundred Ninety Five Pennies that it Costs

I am not an advertising professional but in the profession of scientific research. Yet this book (which was written in the 1940s for advertising people) is just as relevant to my work as it is to anyone else who is a knowledge worker. This little book is one of the simplest summaries of commonsense---and articulating common sense is this book's greatest virtue. The book lays out a five step process for generating novel and not-so-novel ideas, articulating them, and giving them a life of their own. There are no examples, no case studies, just crisply articulated common-sense that you can put to immediate use. Everything that he says is stuff that you likely already know, so this is not one of those books that talks the lofty talk about "retraining your mind" and such obscure, undoable things. The idea in this book that most resonated with me was his comment that novel ideas are simply unusual connections among things that already exist and you might already know. The book takes about an hour to read from cover to cover (and I'm not even a fast reader).

Although Mr. Bernbach probably never intended this book for consumers like me in the scientific research profession, I'd bet my money that this little gem might be just as "duh" or "aha"-evoking to people in any other knowledge-intensive line of white-collar work. The only note of caution: This book was originally written in the 1940s and the gender bias ("the creative man," "he") is pervasive throughout its 48 pages.

If you are in a profession where your "wealth" is measured in intellectual output, this is some of the best seven dollars you can invest in your education. Highly recommended for anyone whose profession requires novelty, new ideas, and creativity. Buy---don't borrow--read, reread, and dog ear this little gem!

One of the few

I have a small collection of books that I consider "private stock". These are books that I never lend and I read over and over. This book is a private stock favorite. James Young has created one of the best books I have ever read on the process of creative thinking. The technique is simple and it works. I have applied this technique to a variety of situations when I needed "outside the box" solutions and it has never failed me. "A Technique for Producing Ideas" is an extraordinary book. It is a book that will make you wonder about the power of the mind and the nature of consciousness itself.

More, much more than a technique: A cohesive methodology

This booklet (28 pages) was originally published in 1940 and some new material was added twenty years later. The Foreword to the edition I have (published by Waking Lion Press in 2009) was provided by William Bernbach (1911-1982), one-time chairman and CEO of what was Doyle Dane Bernbach, then renowned for many of the greatest ads in the 20th century. The booklet's author, James Webb Young (1886-1973), added a "Prefatory Note" in 1960. His first publication, How To Become An Advertising Man (1963), focuses on core concepts that every ad practitioner and copywriter should know:

o Knowledge of Propositions
o Knowledge of Markets
o Knowledge of Messages
o Knowledge of Message Carriers
o Knowledge of Trade Channels
o Knowledge of How Advertising Works
o Knowledge of The Specific Situation

Today, these core concepts continue to provide the "basics" on which all effective marketing depends when attempting to create or increase demand for the given product and/or service and multi-media advertising is without doubt advertising's most powerful resource. However, for at least the past 75 years, everything begins with a compelling idea.

In A Technique for Producing Ideas, Webb offers what he characterizes as a "simple, five-step formula anyone can use to be more creative in business and in life! " Although the process itself is indeed simple, completing it to achieve the given results is a wholly different matter. Webb's focus is on the process by which to generate ideas. "They appear just as suddenly above the surface of the mind [like a lovely atoll above the surface of a deep blue sea]; and with that same air of magic and unaccountability. But the scientist knows that the South Sea atoll is the work of countless, unseen coral builders, working below the surface of the sea." Keep in mind that Webb developed or encountered this insight decades ago.

The details of the five-step "formula are best revealed in context, within the narrative. I will suggest now, however, that (a) this booklet is by no means relevant only to advertising or even to business in general, and (b) it can help almost anyone to develop more and better ideas when seeking a solution to a problem or an answer to a question. Because Webb thinks and writes so clearly, the booklet offers the additional benefit of helping its reader to reduce (if not eliminate) all the "clutter" in the mind that accumulates relentlessly over time.

About the Author

Review of Well Driven Nails

Before getting into my review of "Well Driven Nails" by Byron Yawn, I feel that I must point out a couple of details. First, I am reviewing the book of my pastor and I am glad to have the opportunity. Secondly, I review the book having witnessed the difference that this project has made on Byron Yawn as a man, as a pastor, and as an expositor, that preaches the Word of God every week. I would also like to note that this review is being written from a layman's perspective which is important to note because "Well Driven Nails" is a work aimed at encouraging and exhorting pastors... preachers of the Word. So, why should anyone other than a pastor read "Well Driven Nails"? Well, for starters this reader/reviewer was encouraged and exhorted as a layman. The book also provided wonderful insight into the spiritual life of my pastor, as well as the men he writes about.

Well Driven Nails is the result of Byron Yawn's D. Min. degree that focused on expository preaching. The idea for the book came from his desire to pinpoint what was missing in his preaching and address the issue head on. Byron proceeded to "pick" the brains of the expositors that he admires most to discover what they found was missing in their delivery. His criteria in selecting the interviewees were clarity, depth, and passion. The result is three great conversations with what the modern evangelical world considers giants of reformed theology, they also happen to enjoy pastorates that span decades for each: more than 100 years of pastoral and expository preaching experience between them. We hear from John MacArthur on clarity, R.C. Sproul on depth, and John Piper on passion. These men share what it is to empty their self as a pastor for the sake of the Gospel. It is not academics, it is life, and it is life and death. It would be impossible for me to relay through this review the depth of wisdom that these three men share in Well Driven Nails. I cannot even begin to express the impact that this project has obviously had on my pastor.

As a layman I recommend Well Driven Nails, first, to any pastor that is in that rut and is tired of going from one "church in a box" program to another. Your congregants will not be affected for Christ when, you, their minister, is living in that box. The time has come to preach the Word with clarity, with depth, with passion to be real for and with your congregation. For the layman, this book will help you to better understand the trials pastor's experience that is difficult for them to talk about. It is important to take to heart the truths of Well-Driven Nails that will transform your approach to "expository listening". The Word of God is a connection to the Christian life and pastors pour their own life out for the sake of the Gospel. We all need to thank God for the messages our solid ministers preach by showing them our appreciation by living a transformed life. For my fellow congregants at Community Bible Church, read the book not because Byron wrote it, but because he poured his heart and love for Christ and you into it.

Preaching That's Leadership

An Encouraging Read for the Preaching Class

In an area of Christian literature that is well-stocked and seemingly over-crowded at times, Byron Yawn not only presents a book that is up-to-par but actually brings insight to the subject of preaching. Make no mistake, this book was written for a very specific demographic: the preacher. More specifically, the preacher who is stumped or slumping or plateauing in his growth as a speaker or teacher of God's most precious word. Yawn--despite his name--will restore a preachers excitement, not only for preaching on Sundays, but for exegesis and the personal growth that comes only from a relationship with God that is foundational to sermon preparation. He takes the reader through three main characteristics that define effective preaching: clarity, simplicity, and passion; Yawn then selects well-respected preachers who embody each characteristic and explains what each person aims for in their preaching and why. The structure and form of this book is both engaging and clear, in fact, the book itself embodies the three characteristics it seeks to teach about. It is clear. It is simple. And it is passionate.

Personally, I found this book extremely helpful especially as I prepared a sermon of my own this week. Yawn's combination of technical helps and interviews with the likes of John MacArthur (clarity), R.C. Sproul (simplicity), and John Piper (passion) made this a book I couldn't put down. Throughout the week I would take breaks in my sermon preparation to read this book and then turn back to my preparation with new insight and motivation to love God and the Word that He provided for us! In reading this book, I was able to directly implement many of these encouragements to my sermon preparation, and it definitely created a new experience for me as a preacher. It was also encouraging to read about the convictions and the discipline of some of the most effective and God-glorifying preachers of our time. The book was full of humbling quotes and insights that had me up late at night, pondering the implications of my preaching. It was probably one of the most impactful books on preaching I've read thus far.

I would recommend this book, but to a very specific audience, namely the preaching class. Byron Yawn is very intentional in his introduction in making clear the aims and goals of the book: This book was hand-crafted for the preacher who is seeking to glorify God with faithful exposition, and might just need a little nudge in the right direction to become a more effective preacher. If that's you, then you need to read this book.
