Best Film I read all week

Brian McDonald's "Freeman" is an excellent example of a talented, hardworking Teacher, putting his theories into practice in a successful manner. Known primarily(as far as I know), as a generous passionate teacher, McDonald puts his money where his mouth is so to speak, with this full length movie script. I enjoyed it from cover to cover. It is a fast-paced yet substance-filled ride.
Bolstering the quality content of the book is the Author's Commentary, which follows the script portion. The script itself is an intense, heartbreaking, educational journey with just enough humor throughout to balance the tragic circumstances the main character has to navigate through. But then McDonald walks us through his writing process, sharing well researched, thoroughly worked out theories on the art of storytelling.
It is an illuminating read on many levels, perfect for the casual movie goer, but especially the aspiring (screen) writer. And "Freeman" is definitely the best movie I've read all week.

Great Story Well Told

Brian McDonald certainly knows how to tell a story. Although Freeman is written as a screenplay, it is every bit as enthralling and stirring as a novel, making it hard to put down. For me, a well written script will play out like a movie in your head, making you forget that you are reading a script - this screelay does just that. This script was seriously considered by a couple of the biggest names in Hollywood but sadly, as sometimes happens in the business, will not be produced since another somewhat similar story was already in production by another studio. What is really cool about this book is Brian's commentary at the end. He takes what he has taught over the years in class and in his books and clearly describes how he uses those techniques in this script. He takes all the elements of great storytelling and puts them into place in a screenplay. There are tons of books explaining how to write a great screenplay but this one actually shows you the final product. I am disappointed I won't be seeing this movie on the big screen but thrilled that I got to read the script and get the behind-the-scenes look into the story creation. I highly recommend it for anyone learning the craft of storytelling, particularly in screenplay form, or for anyone who simply loves a great story well told.

You owe it to yourself to read FREEMAN

If only I owned a movie studio, the first movie I'd film would be Brian McDonald's GRAVEROBBERS. The second movie I'd film would be Brian McDonald's FREEMAN.
FREEMAN is a work of art. Compelling story, real-life characters, engaging dialogue, exciting plot, page-turning action, heart-wrenching scenes, and a memorable ending--it has all the elements you want in a great drama for the big screen.
But that's not all. After reading the script, you get the pleasure to peek behind the curtain and read in detail about how Brian CONSTRUCTED his screenplay. It doesn't get better than this. I learned more from Brian's author commentary on FREEMAN than I have from the dozen or so screenplay books I've read in the past 10 years.
Brian McDonald is a brilliant writer and an extremely kind and generous teacher. If you are writing screenplays or want to write screenplays, you owe it to yourself to get a copy of this book.
