Enchantingly Useful and Timely

This book may only be about 130 pgs, but it is exceedingly packed with useful information, exercises, and techniques aimed to work with and improve the practice of just about any magickal path. The author presents the material in an honest, clear, and unflinching manner, and includes stories and descriptions of his own experiences of learning how to manipulate the world around him and within him, including both successes and mistakes. (I loved the story about how to get a bartender's attention in order to get your order in before last call.)

Ethics are, of course, discussed. I mean, this IS a book about manipulation...which will always be a touchy subject. I may not see eye-to-eye on everything that the author talks about, but I do agree with his viewpoints when it comes to using these techniques to alter and improve your own life and how you interact with others and the world. Lasting change must start within.

I also agree with the book that people are already always trying to manipulate you (knowingly or unknowingly), whether their intention is to sell you something--like a new car or a new kind of cereal--or to make you believe what they believe or convince you that their advice is the best. Whether they do so with the honest intent of helping you or just to make a buck, we are bombarded with others trying to make us do what they want us to do or think what they want us to think. The book teaches how to figure out your own greatest needs, as opposed to wants, and how to fulfill them. It also teaches how to sense and protect yourself against outside manipulation, especially that of ill intent.

Techniques for creating trance states are explained (including photos), some of which you can do alone and some with others. The book then goes on to give techniques for influencing yourself and others using gestures (such as hand gestures and using them to project energy), visual interaction (both good and bad, such as the infamous Evil Eye), physical touch (including, thankfully, the risks of such direct contact with people you don't know),and other forms that involve less direct interaction.

Glamouring is an ancient Witch tool, one that has little been explored as late. This book cracks that door open again, serving as a means to take back one of the powers that Witches were always meant to have (and were long accused of having, go figure). Even if you have issues with using what you learn here to manipulate others, you can certainly use it to "glamour" your own self into being who you need to be, to get rid of the overlay put upon you by others, no matter how well-meaning they might have been. I mean, who doesn't have issues? Who couldn't stand to get in touch with their highest (god)self a bit more?

Highly recommended. Highly useful. If you truly seek to create change in the world, to improve your life and the lives of others, then this is definitely a book you need. I'd say it was going to have pride of place on my bookshelf, but most likely it will end up being used too much to stay in one place for very long.

Brilliant Book.

I have a long-time interest in the occult and have been practicing martial arts for over twenty years. In my Aikido class we have been working with techniques that may be considered 'mental', 'spiritual', 'influencial'...not what are typically thought of as martial arts (at least in this country...as far as I know!). So I bought this book, thinking the author could shed further light on the subject, or at least lend another perspective. I am reading it through for the third time, and have begun taking notes and incorporating the practices. This stuff is great. It enhances what I've been doing and expands upon those practices, and offers many other interesting possibilities. One techniques in particular, after only two or three days, has taken my qigong practice to new, unexpected heights. Once I am comfortable with this material, I will buy the author's book 'Visceral Magick' and explore that. It may be a while. There is a lot of stuff in this relatively short book. Buy it and have fun.

SO Good !

I bought this book for myself with a "just to see" attitude. After reading for about 3 hours and practicing a lesson written early in the book, I placed an order for 2 more books for my daughters. I also bought the kindle version for myself so I can highlight and bookmark to my hearts delight. My Grandchildren will be given their own copy of this book in a few years. They will have access to techniques that are taught easily, correctly and not half taught lessons that are often "shared" by other writers.
The book is layed out with many of Mr. Paddon's personal experiences then reasons for the techniques he is using. I like that morals and ethics are well discussed. Next comes the "how to" in a concise step by step lesson with sometime live, out in public, experiments to do. He does not leave out the expected and warnings about unexpected results that you might come across. Based on each step in your education he proceeds to the next lesson, with more practical instructions, building your skills with helpful technique photos and encouragements.
Both of my daughters and I are excited about what we are learning, practicing and telling friends about the book.
I am asking for more books, please, Sir.

Excellent resource

Firstly, let's talk about the structure of the book. This book is broken into three sections:

PART 1 is an introduction to the evolution of computing and how CG has been used for medical simulations and scientific visualizations. It contains three chapters that discuss how hardware and software are progressing over the years in respect of technology. So, this first part of the book is a bit overwhelming on theory. Those who are familiar with CG concepts and terms might see interesting to skip this part.

PART 2 is a Maya crash course. Well, not so "crash" if you consider this is a ten chapters walk. It goes from Maya Interface through Dynamics ending up with two great MEL scripting chapters. Maya users may want to skip this part. However, I consider the two chapters on MEL scripting valuable even for those who are already Maya/MEL users.

PART 3 is the heart of the book. However, it is a rock-solid one. This part contains five project-based chapters. If you are an experienced Maya and MEL user, so you are at one of the most interesting playgrounds you could be. If you are not experienced with Maya/MEL, I suggest you to go back to PART 2 and consider reading it. These five projects/tutorials will make you dive deep into the world of MEL scripting. And believe me: it's rewarding.

This is not a book for the casual 3D modeler and animator. This one is for those really interested in how Maya and MEL can be used to generate 3D animations and simulations for the biology and medical fields. Almost every picture inside this book is related with biomedical applications.

Those looking for learning Maya, this book really brings a pretty descent foundation course on this software. Those looking for learning MEL, this book is a must buy. Just please keep in mind that every example and exercise is targeted to cell biology and its related fields.

this book will get you thinking

Overall I think this book is a decent addition to anyone looking at science visualization if you have a good knowledge of Maya already.
The book is broken into two sections. The first half of the book is really just an intro to maya. If you need this info, then the second half will completely blow you out of the water. I found the second half to be fairly engaging- it is really an exercise in MEL scripting - and a good one.
I think the book could give a more general overview of sci-viz, and not get into specifics so much.
This book is not for the casual Maya user.

About the Author
Roger Hinrichs has been Professor of Physics and department chair at SUNY-Oswego, where he taught energy related courses for over 25 years. His training is in experimental nuclear physics, and his research involves studies of trace materials in environmental and biological samples using PIXE with Oswego's Van de Graaff particle accelerator. He has an interest in energy use in developing countries, and spent time in Kenya and India as well as a year as a Fulbright Scholar in the sultanate of Oman. He co-directs the Institute in Energy Education, a program for secondary school science and technology teachers. In its 20 years, this program has impacted over 500,000 students and has won numerous awards. Dr. Hinrichs also supports active inquiry-based learning in the classroom; some of the activities in this text come from, or are part of, his course "Physics for Elementary Education Majors." He has worked as a consultant at local, state, and national levels on matters of energy policy and energy technologies. Presently, he is a visiting professor at the Weill Cornell Medical College in Qatar.

Merlin H. Kleinbach received his Bachelor's degree from Westmar College, IA; his Masters degree from Colorado State College, 1955; and a doctorate in education from the University of Missouri in 1959. He has taught high school science and industrial arts in Colorado, and college courses in woodworking technology, metals technology, and basic electronics as well as Professional Education graduate courses for seven years at Wayne State College in Nebraska. Given an opportunity to teach and travel overseas, he took a position at Haile Selassie I University in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, for four years (1966-1970), assisting in developing a teacher education program to prepare technology teachers for the newly developed comprehensive school program there. The University employed faculty from several dozen different countries from around the world, providing real insights into other cultures, their concerns, and potential. During this period, he and his family traveled extensively to countries in Europe, Africa, and Asia.

MySQL Workbench is one of those tools that quickly becomes invaluable. It is a SQL query tool, a data modeler, and an admin tool all in one. As such a complicated tool, there is a bit of a learning curve before one can move beyond the basic functionality. Now there is a book that not only is a guided tour of MySQL Workbench but it contains little snippets full of DBA and system admin tricks that make this a must have for anyone using Workbench.

The book is divided into six sections that starts with configuration. This part of the book assumes now previous database or MySQL background as it gently guides you through the installation of the key components on mac OS X, Windows, and Linux. The author's teaching background is very evident here as the material is 'undergraduate proof' and very clearly written. The illustrations are large, clear, and informative.

The second section covers data modeling including creating tables, reverse engineering schemas, and creating routines. This section covers it all from the theory of data modeling through building complex schemas with foreign keys. The discussion on the choice of keys in tables should be mandatory reading for any DBA.

The third section delves into using Workbench for query development and the management of SQL scripts. This section is short and to the point.

Many folks use Workbench as an admin tool and the fourth section covers setting up connections, user management (MySQL has no predefined user roles but Workbench allows the set of users with privileges for various task like DBA, backup administrator, and such). Importing, migrating and exporting databases is extensively covered.

The book finishes up with chapter questions (and you need to be careful; some of the questions are tougher than they look), how to extend Workbench, and setting MS SQL Server (to use the migration tools).

Does the book lack anything? Well, it does not cover the recent MySQL Utilities that allow the cloning of a server for replication and replication fail over. But those are very new and no doubt will picked up for a future revision.

But do you need this book? Yes, if you are new to Workbench and want to get up to speed quickly. Yes if you are getting into data modeling. And yes if you are not a full time DBA and want to use this free tool as your admin interface. Old, barnacle crusted DBAs my not need a copy but they should buy them for their juniors.

Excellent resource for Data Modeling concepts

This book was impressive to me from the start. It explains how to setup the needed programs to get the best use out of the book in simple easy to understand instructions that my grandmother could use. I was able to use the material in this book to help a family member effectively understand data modeling and how to develop it as part of his transition to an economic analyst. The book is of use to folks starting at the raw novice level all the way to experienced DBA's looking to speed up daily tasks. The data modeling and development concepts translate across database platforms to make things easier which every database you decide to use.

Great resource for reviewing Elements of Literature

This is a great product to review elements of literature, and to make sure the student grasped previously taught concepts. It is only 48 pages, of which 34 of them are worksheets along with succinct definitions and examples. So do not expect this to serve as your primary teaching source. However, it does a very good job with the 48 pages provided, and I was happy with the quality of the product. We home school and use a spiral teaching method, so it was useful for that application.

I was really disappointed with this product. It wasn't as helpful as I thought it was going to be. There were some nice resources in the back, examples of stories to use with different kinds of literary concepts like irony. Not worthwhile.

Worth every penny & then some

This does seem to be a very carefully research tome. The original recipes are here but, to make it easier for the modern cook, they are written out again with modern ingredients & of course, weights & measures. Having grown up in the UK, there are many foods that take me back to meals cooked on an old Raburn from basic, readily available food stuff. I am afraid, there are a couple of words I do not agree totally with (Sippits, for one), but on the whole, this is well researched & a cut above so many books of this ilk. There has been a real attempt to use only vouch-safe sources & of course, quote the sources within the body of the text. In short, this is a magificent, well presented book which has not fallen into the trap of substituting erronoeus items. There is clear learning here & a number of the recipes are going to be made. Even some with this books take on sippits! I am glad I found this publication; it is going to be well used.
