David F. Ford is Regius Professor of Divinity at the University of Cambridge, and Director of the Cambridge Inter-faith Programme. He is the author of many books, including most recently The Future of Christian Theology (OUP, 2011), Christian Wisdom: Desiring God and Learning in Love (CUP, 2007), and Shaping Theology: Engagements in a Religious and Secular World (OUP, 2007).

The content of this excellent small book exactly matches the title.

It was a breath of fresh air to read this incredibly well-organized book, and it is a great starting point for further exploration.

It is clear, concise, and balanced, and is designed to introduce a wide audience to (primarily Christian) theology--methods of study and interpretation--without recommending any specific beliefs. It presents centrist views, and notes differing viewpoints, including some of the author’s.

The book is the first reading in the fourth year of Education for Ministry. For EfMers: what a nice change of pace from MacCulloch!

The academic legitimacy of theology as academic subject

Despite working under the constraint of so few pages, Ford has produced a valuable explication of both theology and religious studies as university subjects, presenting a formula of how those subjects both should and can be taught in secular Depths of Religious Studies.
